Hi

My relative was killed in action in 1917, he has no known grave, his name is on a panel at Tyne Cot Cemetery.

He was born in Linlithgow and lived in South Queensferry or Dalmeny when he enlisted in Dunfermline.

My problem is I can't find his name on any of the local memorials, I have been to South Queensferry and Dalment but his name is not listed in his own country.

Could anyone please help try to track down if he has been added to a Scottish memorial anywhere?

He is listed as residing in Wimbledon but this was to be nearer when called to the front as a lot of boys did.

Details are:

James McLean

12043. 1st bat Scots Guards

I hope somebody can help

Many thanks

It is possible like many others that he is not on any home memorials. These commemorations are complex and can depend on next of kin requests where the family were when the names were put forward and so on. It is not simply a case where the he was from or for that matter where the family lived. They are not in any way official in the way CWGC memorials are.

If he lived and worked in Wimbledon he might have been included in a workplace-based memorial in London,as there are quite a few of that nature there. So if you know what he did for a living it might bring you a result. You could a take a look at the Links page here for the details. Click on LLT at top left of this page, scroll down the left side to Links and then scroll down until you come to the Roll of Honour link.

The Scottish National Memorial in Edinburgh Castle has books for each regiment in which the men are listed so he should be in there. I visited the memorial in August and spent quite some time there, it's well worth a visit if you have never been. I found my uncle who died in WW2, a very moving experience.
