kjharris Posted 24 November , 2009 Posted 24 November , 2009 Dear all, The Australian War Memorial has a photo with a caption (ref AWM A01177) which states: 'Australian nurses of No. 22 Stationary Hospital in India' and goes on to name both Australian and British nurses who are standing outside Alexandra War Hospital, Bombay. The photo is 'dated' 1916. I cannot find any information on No. 22 Stationary Hospital, let alone this hospital in India - can anyone help please? The information may be incorrect because many of the named nurses from Australia did not arrive in India until 1917 and there were at least six hospitals they were posted to on arrival. British clues include Miss Harvey, RRC, Lady Superintendent for India is supposedly in the picture, as well as Colonel Anderson, RAMC. The hospital had RAMC personnel. best wishes, Kirsty H
royalredcross Posted 24 November , 2009 Posted 24 November , 2009 The only Harvey I can trace in connection with India is Minnie Elizabeth who received the ARRC in September 1919 for services in connection with the war. If the information about her seems comtemporary, then I would suspect that the date 1916 is incorrect and is an error for 1919. Norman

Sue Light Posted 7 December , 2011 Posted 7 December , 2011 I seem to be a bit late in the day for the original question, but I believe 22 Stationary Hospital was a normal British hospital working in India. The existing pre-war British hospitals in India were not able to cope with the increase in wartime work and a few British medical units went out to India to support them. There is no unit war diary at The National Archives, as India was not a theatre of war, and therefore there was no necessity (officially) to keep one. With reference to Miss Harvey - as a member of Queen Alexandra's Military Nursing Service (India) any surviving record of service will be at the British Library who hold all records for the service, but they are a bit patchy. Sue
