Hello Sadsac!

Thanks again I have 9 listed which includes the above as follows the Problem is these 2 ratings which are errors and need resolving hopefully!

Reuben Mitchell AB 7276 and William Henry Pritchard Telegraphist K28154 these don`t exist and I have mislaid the source I used. These errors were pointed out by Don Kindell when he was checking mine and his lists!

These ratings check out just need confirmation they were on the E 14!

IAN, quite understand your problem re MITCHELL & PRITCHARD !!

This is because you should have ;

MITCHELL Ronald AB 7476 RAN - Note ; RAN - he was DD E14 not a survivor.

PRICHARD William Henry (note NOT PriTchard) TEL D/J 36101 D.o.B ; 011298 P.o.B ; Pwihelli Caenarvon

He is noted as POW Turkey.

Mitchell R A N - Something for DB to poke his nose into !!

More on others later.

Hello

REUBEN JOSEPH EDWIN MITCHELL, 7476. From his R.A.N. service record (which are on line free - wish TNA would do the same).

He was a Prisoner of War from E 14. He returned home at the end of 1918 and died 16 March 1934.

Many thanks, Dennis, for bringing this to light.

Hello Don, thanks for your input. Good that we `collaborate together'.

Must admit to having `wrong' Mitchell put in - yes it was REUBEN M & NOT Ronald as I entered - saw Ron & without a check put that in instead of REU - if you see what I mean. In my fle I had that he was `lost' in E14 but further check has that as `wrong'!! Did not know that he returned home & `Crossed-the-Bar' in 1934. So thanks for that. Do you know his `home-town' & when born ??

As to PriTchard & Prichard - I agonised over that some years ago, but after getting ADM 188 on him that must be !! I suspect that it has been written down `wrong', but thats the RECORD - SO !!!

Regards

DON, quite agree re `tremendous chaps' on this Forum.

Got another `what, what ?? For you to look in to.

Any ideas re the following that I have done for DB in E14 Thread. This chap was E41 survivor

DEANE - this has thrown up an `anomaly' ! On checking I see that DEANE has name Charles Drane - BUT on further check his No. 311070 gives DRANE Charles ??!! So, my mistake, or the Record Card or file ADM 188 @ NA ???

Must look up next PRO visit. Any ideas.

Hello Sadsac

I think you need to look at his card his record. DB and I have had a number of men whose names were misread when they were entered. Using Calligraphy for the last name is pretty, but sometimes hard to read: HINGSTON read as KINGSTON comes to mind. DEANE morphing into DRANE could very well be another misread.

i remember Hurlock having his birthdate wrong, which they fixed to me.

Reuben Joseph Edwin Mitchell was my g-grand uncle. He died August 16, 1954. National Archives of Australia has information on him and also if you check http://upperiscope.com.au/ you will find additional info. Some military historians say he should have received the VC for his actions on the E14. I have actually read a letter about his actions on the E14. As a result of his survivial he was a POW in Turkey. My father met him once, but he died before I was born. Earlier on in his career his on on the AE2, an Australian submarine.

Hello Sadsac, thank you for your reply and information. There must be an error on the sub service records as my father met him in the early 50's and births, deaths and marriages confirm 1954 as his date of death. Also http://upperiscope.com.au/ confirms 1954 and on the National Archivies he has service records that go up to 1938 and he is the next of kin for his sons in WWII. I wasn't aware until a few days ago that E14 had been found last June. The AE2 that he was on earlier in the war was only found in the last few years as well.

Thanks

Ballarat, Victoria for you who don't live in Australia is about 100km from Melbourne. Reuben was born in Ballarat, but I believe he only lived there for a few years after his return. He moved around Victoira and New South Wales. He worked on a light house for a while I believe. He died and is buried in Melbourne, Victoria. I note his next of kin is unknown. It was his father Thomas Mitchell. However Thomas died in 1918 whilst Reuben was a POW, so his mother Alice would then have been his NOK. Reubens father was born in Northumberland, England and on his maternal side his grandparents were Cornish, so he was virtually English anyway.

Trish, apologies for getting the wrong date DD. Will alter card . 1934 / 1954 - small error, but poor `inputting' !!
