Hello,

I hope this is the right place for my request for help.

My father was in the 1st World War and every November the conversation arises about his service and medals etc.

Did he have any medals and where did he serve etc?

Well I've never seen any and I don't recall him or my mam ever talking about any.

If I give you some details I'm hoping some of you good people will be able to enlighten me.

John Shipley

Born August 1897

Private 241548

5th Kings Own Yorks Light Infantry

This extra bit of information which may be of some help.

Date of final Discharge: 3-5-1917

Cause of Discharge: Being no longer physically fit for war service (under KR Para 392 (XUI)

Thank you,

Tykesman.

No pre 4 digit TF number would suggest that John didn't go overseas until 23rd December 1916 and as a draft to the 1/5th Bn. or 2/5th Bn. Is John any relation to Pte 241588 Fred Shipley who was KiA with the 1/5th Bn. KOYLI?

Hello jay dubaya,

Is John any relation to Pte 241588 Fred Shipley who was KiA with the 1/5th Bn. KOYLI?

I don't think so, I never heard mention of a Fred Shipley in the family, but I could be wrong.

Gary

Thank you very much for the information.

What does D.S.S 2/6/83 stand for on the right hand side of the card?

Is there any way of knowing if the two medals were sent to him?

Regards,

Tykesman.

Hello

Last week I asked,

What does D.S.S 2/6/83 stand for on the right hand side of the card?

Is there any way of knowing if the two medals were sent to him?

I know you help a lot of people on here and it must be very time consuming but is there any chance of knowing if the medals were sent to my dad?

Thanks

Tykesman.

There's nothing on the MIC to say that the medals were returned so one could assume that your father did recieve his medals. The clerks reference on the MIC could be a date perhaps from a previous enquiry.

OK, thanks for the help.

It will have to go down as one of life's little mysteries.

Tykesman.
