Does anyone know which library etc may hold newspapers which cover the village of Stockton, in between Rugby, Leamington spa and Rugby, trying to checkout a chap who came from the village and served with the 11 KRRC, any help appreciated

It could be any of them. The local studies section at the Coventry Archives could possibly have something as well, such as the Coventry and Warwickshire Graphic.

11th Bn KRRC. DOW 30 Nov 1917. Aged 22. Son of Henry a Limestone quarryman and Emma Wall of Post Office Lane, Stockton. Awarded MM (LG 2/4/18) arrived in France 21/7/15. Wounded 5 times previously. Commemorated on the Cambrai Memorial.

Info from THE COUNTY OF WARWICKSHIRE ROLL OF HONOUR 1914-2005. Published in 2005.

Also mentioned is most likely a cousin. George William Wall 11429 3rd Coldstream Guards. DOW 14/4/18. Son of John and Annie of Post Office Lane, Stockton.

Unfortunately have not anything on the man you are looking for at home, some Walls in the direction of Meriden and Corley Moor but nothing on Stockton Walls. I maybe in the archives tomorrow and have a look in the index for the name.

terry, the warwickshire roll of honour 2005 was that the book that cost about £200. Has it come down in price.

Thanks

Tharkin/Terry, thanks for the info, i have sent an email to the Coventry archives, do you think there is much chance of finding related newspaper articles for the MM etc

Hi

Stockton is nearest to Southam, but this did not have any local papers. I think that Leamington is the most likely to cover the area.

Local papers:

Leamington Spa Courier (at Leamington Spa Library)

Royal Leamington Spa Chronicle

Leamington Spa Warwick Kenilworth & District Daily Circular (changes to Morning News in 1919) (at Birmingham Library)

All these are also available at the British Library Newspaper Reading Room at Colindale. If you plan to visit, then I suggest that you visit their website and check about advance ordering requirements, registration as a reader etc.

There are several Rugby papers as well, but I think these less likely to cover Stockton.

Rugby Advertiser (at Rugby Library)

Rugby Observer (at Rugby Library)

Rugby & Kineton Advertiser (more likely to cover Stockton, Colindale only as far as I can see)

There are Warwick papers also:

Warwick & Warwicks Advertiser (at Warwick Record Office, Birmingham Library, Solihull Library)

Warwick & Leamington Times

Daventry is the same distance from Stockton as Leamington, but being in a different County (Northants) is unlikely to contain news of the area I think.

Hope this is some help. All the above available at Colindale. I have only included the papers that run through the First World War!

Jim, thanks for the list, i think i will have more difficulty narrowing the search than finding Cpl Wall

i will be visiting Colindale in December, but doubt i will have time to check the associated newspapers out on the visit, so will have plenty of time to plan a return trip, Geoff

Hi

Sorry have just read the rest of the thread, we are distantly related to the WALL family, many of which now reside in Bishops Itchington, Southam, Warwickshire.

I will be able to check my info this evening and send further info and see if I come up with a match or connection in any way, I have some links to the Wall family who are researching there Family Tree.

All the best

Terry
