jackybower Posted 19 November , 2009 Posted 19 November , 2009 Hi Can anybody interpret this navy service record for me please? I've got the records of two brothers, Jim and Joshua - this one is Jim's. I've never seen these records before so don't really know what it is I'm seeing. Any help gratefully received Thanks Jacky
sotonmate Posted 19 November , 2009 Posted 19 November , 2009 j-b Signed on in Devonport May 1918 for Hostilities only (the duration of the war).J88925 is his service number,in the Devonport series, different prefix letter for each main Naval centre. It shows his rank through his short service as Ordinary Seaman. Columns on the left are Ships (well, administration units) (HMS) VIVID 1 is like an HQ for an organisation, possibly of small craft under it's control,or training elements to prepare the sailors for sea duties. HMS IOLARE (?) is similar, you will see that he was posted to 2 different MLs (Motor Launches) whilst there, and then reverted to VIVID 1 again prior to demobilisation in Jan 1919. The mid section of the form has dates that he served within each posting. The right hand shows his character/ability (he was categorised VG (very good) and Satisfactory). The stamped comment is on the right below other data says about payment of War Gratuity,a sort of bonus at the end of his service. Sotonmate
