stephen p nunn Posted 19 November , 2009 Posted 19 November , 2009 Evening all. Spoke to a lady last night who was really desperate to find out about her grandfather: Thomas Henry WELLARD, a private in the RF and KIA. Said she wanted to know more about him so I have done a bit of work (mostly via Ancestry - MC, SDGW, BDM) and discovered the following: Born 1883 in Camberwell. Enlisted October 1914 at Ealing. First in France 1/6/1915 KIA at Hulluch 2/3/1916 On Loos Memorial (panel 25-27) Entitled to medal trio Have I wrung it dry or is there anything else I can tell her (she wanted his SR but doesn't seem to have survived). Thanks pals All the best. SPN Maldon
charlesmessenger Posted 19 November , 2009 Posted 19 November , 2009 Maldon He was with the 8th Royal Fusiliers when they first crossed to France with the 12th Division and was killed during the Battalion's first significant action - the battle for the Hohenzollern Craters. If you PM me your e-mail address I can send you scans of the pages describing the action from my history of the battalion. Alternatively, if she would like a copy of the book it is titled Brief but Glorious: A Brief History of the 8th (Service) Battalion The Royal Fusiliers 1914-18 and can be obtained from the Museum of the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers at the Tower of London.
