tomdhu Posted 19 November , 2009 Posted 19 November , 2009 I would appreciate assistence in interpreting all the information on my uncle's Medal Card. He was KIA 92 years ago tomorrow on the first day of the battle of Cambrai. He was with the 1/6th Seaforths and is mentioned by name in "Flesquieres" (P98) by Horsfall & Cave I know he was mobilised at Elgin in August 1914 so presumably he was already in the teritorials and he sailed on 1st May 1915 for France. The link is at:- Medal Card Many thanks
sotonmate Posted 19 November , 2009 Posted 19 November , 2009 Tom Dhu The red ink shows he was a Corporal 451 in the Seaforths and as such he landed in France on 1.5.1915 which entitled him to the 1915 Star, there is a ref for that too. Then on the right of the card it says, again in red,"Dis" (discharged).Maybe his time was up so he had to leave. In blue ink now,he re-enlisted,maybe as a TF, Private 4371 in the Seaforths. Later he was given a Commission (Territorial Force) as a 2nd Lieutenant in the 6th Seaforths, dated 29.11.1916. He was killed in action on 20.11.1917. The other medal details are in blue too as they wouldn't have been issued until around 1920,by the Regiment in which he last served, but for his first landing in France as a Corporal in 1915. There are two comments each concerning his medal issues as being issued to the recipient (in this case to the address on the back of the card). The other memo ref at bottom NW/6/21114 also refers to medal matters in his time as a 2/Lt . Sotonmate

I'm interested in your source, as the record I got was from National Archive in Kew and it was only in black & white. Yours was colour. Tom
