I know my grandad died in 1926 aged 32 suffering from the effects of gas poisoning during WWI. My great friend Tony has kindly supplied me with the medal cards for the only two Daniel's that are listed as having served and survived I am trying to narrow down to the actual person now with your help please. One of these Daniels served with the Royal Lancashire Regiment - Private No. 19980 but they don't seem to have come under these gas attacks? The other served with the Lancashire Fusiliers - Private No. 42908 who I have found did come under these sort of attacks. Both of these Daniel Fagan's then went on to serve with the Labour Corps (609044 and 579632 respectively) Is there a body or organisation I could write to that would confirm his home address in Liverpool as I have this?.

Thanking you, Ged.

Do you mean Royal Lancaster Regiment? Do you have Battalions numbers for both Regiments. How do you know that one did not suffer gas attacks. Did they not leave the UK?

Hello Steve and Annie - thank you both for your prompt replies.

Sorry Steve, is it Royal Lancaster, I was informed Lancashire. I can't find any account of them coming under poisonous gas attacks though that of course doesn't mean that they didn't. Sorry, I have very little on Daniel so no battalion numbers. Would it be the case then that all battalions came under gas attacks as that was what was steering me towards the Lancashire Fusiliers Daniel.

Annie, Tony did pass me the medal card you kindly found for me and I asked him to thank you as never thought i'd come across you so soon so now I can thank you myself so thank you. Tony did find me a medal card also for a Daniel in the Royal Lanc Reg (whether that be Lancashire or Lancaster as Steve mentions above)

I'm just wondering what the next step would be in obtaining the records for both Daniels, I understand I would have to pay someone for the search/copies etc. At least with only two to find i'll be sure that although one set of records will be of no use to me, the other ones will. Perhaps I can then pass the others on to whoever might need them.

Another alternative is, are there records for the Labour Corps and if so how do I go about getting hold of them or ascertaining which one of those Daniels was my grandad. Oh the things I should have asked my dad - bah.

I am afraid the relevant Labour Corps documents were destroyed by German bombing during WW2.

Ged I have tried spelling his surname different ways and still nothing for him. He sure is hiding well. Something somewhere will list him.

Was there any voting roles taken for soldiers during WW1? I would have no idea how to access them if there was. Would anybody know?

Don't know if this helps, but I found quite a bit about my grandad from the pension records. assuming your grandad was eligible for a war pension

Thanks everyone. So if both regiments came under gas attacks i'm still no nearer knowing which of these 2 Daniel Fagan's in my grandad then. Just got his death cert through and he died of Pulmonary Phthisis which apparently is another name for TB/Consumption - it says 3 years after it - assuming that's the length of time he suffered with it? It was my dad who told me died from the effects of the gas poisoning from WWI so I assume his mum told him this when he enquired about his death as he was only 6 in 1926 at the time, my grandad being 32. Thanks everyone again for their efforts.
