Sue S Posted 29 November , 2009 Share Posted 29 November , 2009 Can I add two Aldridge men to the list. Private 25860 Richard Page 2nd Batt South Staffs. The Aldridge War Memorial gives his date of death as 31-7-1918 whilst Commonwealth War Graves has 1-8-1918. Buried Bienvillers Military Cemetery. He was 20 years old Regimental Sergeant Major 442194 Arthur Page MC Durham Light Infantry, was evacuated from Dunkirk and awarded his MC the following year for 'personal bravery beyond reproach'. He was killed at El Alamein 2-11-1942 aged 39. Arthur was shot in the leg at about 1am whilst going to the assistance of a party who were clearing a German dugout. The medical officer who came to treat him was shot and killed and it fell to the stretcher bearer to attend to Arthur's wounds. The group of men stayed where they were awaiting help but aroung mid-morning Arthur was shot by a sniper. This information was given to me by his son. Richard and Arthur were the sons of William and Elizabeth Page of Aldridge. Sue S

Nigel Marshall Posted 29 November , 2009 Share Posted 29 November , 2009 Name: MAHAFFY, HENRY IRWIN Initials: H I Nationality: United Kingdom Rank: Second Lieutenant Regiment/Service: Royal Flying Corps Age: 23 Date of Death: 22/10/1917 Additional information: Son of William Irwin Mahaffy and Jeannie Mahaffy, of Augustaville, Bangor. Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead Grave/Memorial Reference: Wall. 112. This from the 'World War One Memorial Book' published by North Down Museum & North Down Borough Council, compiled by Katrina Clydesdale. The Forum's own MagicRat is mentioned first among those who assisted Miss Clydesdale in her work. Well done Alan! 'Second Lieutenant Henry Irwin Mahaffy was the eldest son of William and Jeanie Mahaffy of , "Augustaville", Bangor. Henry was educated at the local Bangor Endowed School and before joining the army he was studying law with his fathers firm H&W Mahaffy Solicitors on Callendar Street, Belfast. Like many young men he was a keen rugby player and was a member Bangor Rugby Club. He enlisted early in the war as a Private in the Ulster Division and after lengthy service at the front he returned home to qualify for a commission in the Royal Flying Corps, which he received in May 1917. Henry then was sent to Salisbury Plain where he would be fully trained in aerial combat before being sent to the front. Salisbury Plain was and still is today the biggest military training ground in the United Kingdom, and during the First World War the first flying school was formed there. Tragically, just five months later, during his training before he saw any active fighting Henry was killed in a flying exercise. He was unfortunately one of many young men who were killed during their training in flying acidents, by the end of the war some 8000 men had lost their lives in this way. In the opening years of the war the number of fatalities in such circumstances was incredibly high, therefore, new measures had been put in place in 1917 in an attempt to improve the safety of air force training and reduce the number of casualties, these measures did improve the safety and fewer men were losing their lives. However, accidents continued to happen at Royal Flying Corps taining grounds and on October 27th Henry was killed. He was just 23 years old.'
