melliget Posted 10 November , 2009 Posted 10 November , 2009 Just noticed this story on the ABC. The Official History of Australia in the War of 1914–1918 (Charles Bean) is now available online: Announcement: http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2009/11/10/2738490.htm http://www.abc.net.au/news/video/2009/11/10/2738948.htm The Official History of Australian in WW1 (the resource): https://www.awm.gov.au/collection/C1416531 I've eyed this collection of books ("the colour of dried blood") in various antiquarian bookshops many a time. Perhaps I now won't be tempted! Martin
stevew Posted 10 November , 2009 Posted 10 November , 2009 Martin, Just noticed that myself whilst looking for some info on Bean. I shan't be holding my breath for the Official British Histories Steve
MartinWills Posted 10 November , 2009 Posted 10 November , 2009 The Aus. histories (bar volume 12) have been available for quite a while of the AWM site and the collection of war diaries available for download (again, free) has significantly increased. Beans own diaries, notebooks and folders are a more recent addition. You will also find "Anzac to Amiens" - Beans short history not to mention Gallipoli Mission and the Aus. Medical History. As regards the British Official History, I believe one of the 1914 volumes was available online (a forum search should find it).
Brian Curragh Posted 10 November , 2009 Posted 10 November , 2009 As regards the British Official History, I believe one of the 1914 volumes was available online (a forum search should find it). Martin Both 1914 volumes are available online - August-October and October-November. Regards Brian
melliget Posted 10 November , 2009 Author Posted 10 November , 2009 Thanks for clarifying that, Martin. I'm jumped to conclusions there - perhaps it's the heat stress! Scans of the new addition, Bean's own diaries, folders and notebooks, can be found here: http://www.awm.gov.au/collection/war_diaries/cew_bean/ Martin
stevew Posted 11 November , 2009 Posted 11 November , 2009 Martin Both 1914 volumes are available online - August-October and October-November. Regards Brian Brian, A month ago I wouldn't have found them Steve
Staffsyeoman Posted 11 November , 2009 Posted 11 November , 2009 I never cease to be amazed by what our Commonwealth colleagues put online for free (bless them) whereas we are increasingly expected to pay eye-wateringly expensive subscriptions to commercial sites. I wouldn't want to read a history by the other Bean... "Chapter 2: The Battle of the Aisne, 1914 Oooooww..... woooww waaa oow. Woow? Owww....."
Brian Curragh Posted 15 November , 2009 Posted 15 November , 2009 Brian, A month ago I wouldn't have found them Steve Steve We must be learning something then! Hope the poets research is going well - I certainly know more about the Official Histories than I used to - see you on the 5th. Brian
melliget Posted 16 November , 2009 Author Posted 16 November , 2009 I wouldn't want to read a history by the other Bean... "Chapter 2: The Battle of the Aisne, 1914 Oooooww..... woooww waaa oow. Woow? Owww....." Though Captain Blackadder's explanation of why Private Baldrick's cunning plan for Normandy was doomed to fail might be interesting..
