Just cannot find any info on Henry Hudson

Hello I am new to this site.

I have been trying to find details of my Gran's first husband Henry Hudson. I have searched service records on Ancestry and the CWGC website but cannot track him down. It is know he was killed when his youngest daughter was 10 months old and she was born in October 1915. It is supposed he belonged to a London regiment. He was born in 1886 in Wandsworth, London, which is where the family were still living in 1911.

Is there any reason why I would not be able to trace him?

Where can I turn next, unfortunately I am only able to search via the internet/post etc.

It is known that his younger brother joined up in 1915 and was in the 10th London regiment.

Any help would be gratefully received.

If you are searching on http://www.cwgc.org you only enter the initial H for a Christian name otherwise if you put Henry it will show no hits.

There are a few (11) to look through for 1916 and you might recognise him, though the two specifically named Henry don't fit the year of birth you quote. You also might want to widen it to other years,it won't be the first time that info was wrong !

Thanks I've already tried all those, to no avail

Hi Bebi, could it be this man.

Henry Hudson

If not, do you have any other information, middle name?

Cheers Mike

Edit, did you spot the deliberate mistake

On second thoughts, it won't be him, will it?

Do you have any other info?

Is this him? Charles Henry HUDSON.647, Private . 5 London Regt.

http://www.cwgc.org/search/casualty_detail...casualty=117003

I found a likely entry in SDGW (Soldiers Died in the Great War) and it ties in to this soldier.

Born London, enlisted Forest Gate. Died of Wounds 7.7.1916

Had a look at SDGW.

The only Henry Hudson that's listed as London Regiment is Private 3344 Henry Hudson.

7th (City of London) Battallion.

Enlisted: Sun Street.

Residence: Lambeth

Died Date: 25/09/1915

Killed in Action

France & Flanders

Lambeth is not that far from Wandsworth but I realise that the dates dont add up

The problem here is trying to match up the 'facts' from CWGC and what the OP is telling us is presumed.

You need to go with what is known and work from there, ie: 'It is supposed he belonged to a London regiment'. Therefore he could really have been in any regiment.

WE need to know his wife and parents names in the hope they are listed on CWGC/SDGW.

Bebi,

You seem positive about the 1911 situation - is this from the census of 1911 ? If it is, please let us know his parent's names, as asc Kim says, once we have those I'm sure we'll find the "correct" chap.

Welcome to the Forum, Bebi,

Assuming he's the son of John and Susan, husband of Gertrude L (nee LEATHERBY), living at 119 Culvert Road, Battersea, in 1911 (but born Wandsworth), who had a daughter Frances in Q4 1915, then this could be him - notwithstanding the date discrepancy:

Name: Harry HUDSON

Regiment, Corps etc.: London Regiment

Battalion etc.: 11th (County of London) Battalion (Finsbury Rifles)

Last name: Hudson

First name(s): Harry

Initials: H

Birthplace: Wandsworth

Enlisted: London

Residence: Battersea

Rank: RIFLEMAN

Number: 452688

Date died: 16 March 1917

How died: Killed in action

Theatre of war: France & Flanders

CWGC:

Name: HUDSON

Initials: H H

Nationality: United Kingdom

Rank: Rifleman

Regiment/Service: London Regiment (Finsbury Rifles)

Unit Text: 2nd/11th Bn.

Date of Death: 16/03/1917

Service No: 452688

Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead

Grave/Memorial Reference: I. M. 9.

Cemetery: BELLACOURT MILITARY CEMETERY, RIVIERE

http://www.cwgc.org/search/casualty_detail...casualty=557959

No idea where CWGC got the extra inital H from! Neither his MIC nor his GRO entry show a second initial, and Henry son of John & Susan didn't have one either.

Unfortunately there don't seem to be any further details available to confirm or deny the above. It's just a guess based on "born Wandsworth, residence Battersea".

Hi Adrian

Yes that is my man, son of John & Susan born 4th October 1886 ( I have a copy of his birth certificate) and husband of Gertrude Louisa Leatherby, I am wondering if the "Aunt Fran was 10 months old" is correct or not, I suppose she could have been 10 months old when my Gran heard of his death, or not, just the recollections of family history told to me by my Mum.

Is it possible all his records are among those lost during bombing in WW2?

I initially thought he was the H H Hudson as you state above and it might prove to be so.

Maybe he will always remain a mystery, I have spent many an hour trying to track him down and he isn't even a blood relation? It's more frustrating because I can trace the service records of his brother Arthur, who survived the war.

Thanks everyone for your input, I'll just have to hope & pray that one day he will surface.
