John Cubin Posted 7 November , 2009 Posted 7 November , 2009 Recently was in B&B in Bernafay Woods where I met a chap having difficulty pinning down one of his forebears. From family sources, his info was - Alfred Jones, Lance Corporal, Northumberland Fusiliers, Enlisted 10/11/1914, Discharged 1/4/1919. No service or battalion number. He tried the museum in Alnwick but the response was - no can do without a service number. So, Pals, who can resolve this 'catch 22'? Any advice, suggestions I will pass on. We have a potential member, here, who we could send off on that long, long search.
sotonmate Posted 7 November , 2009 Posted 7 November , 2009 JC There are six Alfred Jones who were in the NF at some time, according to Ancestry UK MICs. Only one has a rank other than Private. Corporal Alfred G JONES 27563 Notts and Derbys, and then 85166 NF. Not into a War Theatre until after 31 Dec 1915. Sotonmate
Graham Stewart Posted 7 November , 2009 Posted 7 November , 2009 Pick of the bunch from the MIC's would be 15440 Pte(later L/CPL) Alfred Jones of Cannock, Staffs who enlisted around that time and served initially with the 13th Bn,NF. He is listed as being wounded in October 1916 and is known to have served at home with the 3rd(Res)BN,NF before being posted to the 20th Bn,NF. He was listed as being wounded again in December 1917 and finally posted to the 1/5th Bn,NF. This lad was discharged medically but I haven't got a date for that. I hopefully take it we have no middle name and he's just plain Alfred Jones???
John Cubin Posted 7 November , 2009 Author Posted 7 November , 2009 Sotonmate, Graham. Thank you for the replies. I shall pass it all on to the bloke and hope that something might ring a bell! Good on you both, John.
John Cubin Posted 8 November , 2009 Author Posted 8 November , 2009 Pals, I have to aplogise for sending you down a false trail. My contact has come back having checked the 1901 census to find that Alfred Jones is in fact ALBERT Jones (he only had the initial 'A' and assumed Alfred. Who said that great truism 'Don't assume, check!) Sorry for the red herring but thanks again for your efforts. Incidentally, this Jones family lived in Cannock, Staffs. All the best, John.
Graham Stewart Posted 8 November , 2009 Posted 8 November , 2009 I'm afraid of the eight Alberts that served with the NF - none of their numbers inidicate having served with the regiment from November 1914 and four of those eight were transferred in from other units.
John Cubin Posted 8 November , 2009 Author Posted 8 November , 2009 Thanks, Graham, I think we'll just put this one to bed. John.
