Hi

I have been given a medal to Thomas F Smith Pte 28637 Yorkshire Regiment, his MIC also records that he was in the Durham LI as 6/5703 & 203868, can anyone tell me anymore about him?

Thanks

The letters and numbers against his medal issues on the MIC will link you to the original Medal Roll and reveal the Battalion he served in to become entitled to campaign medals. He would have been in the Yorkshires on first arrival in a war theatre.Maybe later wounds/sickness meant he was posted to the first needy regiment on regaining fitness.

The second of the DLI numbers (203868) relates to the 1917 re-numbering of the Territorial Force and puts him in the 5th Battalion.

Thomas joined the Yorkshire Regiment on the 14th June 1916 as a 27 year old farmer, at the time living unmarried in Chapel St. Easingwold, York. He left for France on the 18th October as part of 11th Yorkshire regiment but was soon posted to the 3rd Yorkshires on 23rd August. On October 10th he was then posted to the 7th DLI only to be transferred to the 6th 8 days later. There are no further records of his service, only his signing for his 2 medals after the war. Seems a rather illusive chap post 1916.

Hi Guys

Thanks very much for the info, but Jim, bit confused by your dates, are the 23/08 and 10/10 in 1917? and if its not being too cheeky, where did you get the info from?

Thanks again

They are from his service records and there is no date on them post October 1916. He has no pension records at Kew, therefore apart form a signature on the receipt of his war medals, militarily he disappears in 1916!!??

Maybe someone will dig something else up.

There's a faint note on his statement of service sheet that shows he was transferred to the 5th Reserve Battalion D.L.I on 19th July* 1917 pending admission to a Con* Depot

* As I said the entry is faint and I'm not totally sure it says "7" for the month and there's a word before depot that I can't be sure of either but it could be "Con" for Convalescent.

Hi Guys

Thanks again for the info, are the records you are looking at on Ancestry? I spent hours on there yesterday but could not find them!

Yes they are, go the Service Records and put Smith as Surname and 28637 as Number and voila, a single hit!

Steve
