Not much, i'm afraid...

A possibility this may be him;

Gillott. C.E. Served. St Mary's Church Roll of Honour, Bramall Lane, Sheffield

From looking at FreeBDM and 1911 census, Charles Ernest born 1897, looks more likely than the various Charles Edwards.

(You say you have his MIC card. There are three different cards for him on National Archives. Have you seen them all?)

Well that's a start his citations state he was from Sheffield .But and its a problem he was at pre war soldier so in 1915 he would have only been 18 and a cpl ,But stranger things have happened .As to the NA no i have not looked as i found his MIC on ancestry but will have a look he was acting csm by late 1917 does not fit the mold(CSM at 20 ?) I know 2/lts often were that age but a CSM was as you are aware a senior nco rank usually by the stories you read 6 foot 30 years plus and tough as nails(of course not all) .But thanks very much i will have a look at NA and see

Sorry, that was a typo.

Births Sep 1887 (>99%)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

GILLOTT Charles Ernest Sheffield 9c 431

It's only circumstantial at this stage, of course...

Again thanks even having just those two details the church and middle name help heaps

Unfortunately, you'd have to buy some credits to view the actual census;

http://www.1911census.co.uk/search/results...px?x=1271339103

May confirm or rule out whether it's your man.

And here's my suspect in 1901, at 13 - Iron Moulders Apprentice

No problem you have been very helpful I have copied the links and will take it from there

Thanks MC PS Is wirral about 5 km north of Sheffield I believe being were you are ? :unsure::unsure:
