Hi, I am new to this forum and I am trying to find out information about my great grandfather George Leonard Neale. I know he served in WWI, having seen his medal index card. However I have been unsuccessful in finding service records or anything else about him, so I was wondering if anyone knows where I can go from here.

George's details are:

Full Name: George Leonard NEALE

Date of Birth: 5th October 1896

Regiment: 2nd Royal Welsh Fusiliers

Regimental Number: 5177

Any information about him would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Welcome to the Forum

All I can see at the moment is the medal card you refer to.

That does not show a date entering theatre which means it was 1916 onwards.

Can I ask what makes you say he was a 2nd Battalion man?

Thanks for your reply. My grandfather told me that he was the 2nd RWF, but I'm not positive about that because we have no records that show it. I think George Neale signed up in 1914 when he was only seventeen because apparently his mother Louisa was really upset at first and asked her husband to tell them he was underage. She later changed her mind.

Thanks!

Grumpy(and FreckNeale)

I don't think FreckNeale will be able to PM you until he/she has 10 posts. I will therefore send you a PM reminder around about Wednesday.

In case you don't know PM is Personal Message (via the Forum)

Grumpy has an in depth understanding of the RWF and especially the 2nd Bn. Hopefully there will be some info/considered opinion for you next week.

Hi There,

can't help with your Great Grandfathers information at this time but I do know of a Pte. C. E. Neale who was in the RWF.

Regards,

Chris Neale.

Only one reference in my databases: Pte GL Neale 3177 [nb 3177] 2nd RWF mentioned in a Birmingham newspaper as a casualty 30 Aug 1916 believed to have survived the war.

His number, whether 5177 or 3177 and his age make it impossible for him to have been a regular soldier. Most likely that he was a Special Reservist drafted into 2nd battalion.

Thank you Grumpy for the information.

Chris, I don't know of any connection to the C. E. Neale that you mentioned. As far as I know there were no other close Neale relations who served because George's younger brothers would not have been old enough.

Thanks,

Hi FreckNeale,

Always worth a try I guess as there could of been a connection!

Good luck with your own quest though.

Regards,

Chris Neale.
