LloydUK Posted 5 November , 2009 Posted 5 November , 2009 Hi all, Does anybody have any information on a Private Robert James McElroy, Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers. His regimental number is 10065, and he enlisted in Londonderry. I'm not sure about any dates other than that he died on 21st October 1916. I assume he died in the Battle of the the Somme, as he is mentioned on the Thiepval Memorial. Many Thanks! Lloyd

LloydUK Posted 5 November , 2009 Author Posted 5 November , 2009 Lloyd Have you seen this site yet. http://www.diamondwarmemorial.com/soldiers/view/711 Regards, Tommy. PS: Welcome to the forum by the way Thanks, and yes I had seen that MIC - Has him entering theatre with 1st 17/3/1915. John Thanks alot! Does that say Balkans as the theatre? And (according to http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documen...ine/medals.asp), would the '(2B) Balkans' mean it was Gallipoli (Dardanelles)?
archangel9 Posted 5 November , 2009 Posted 5 November , 2009 Yes Balkans and yes that means Gallipoli (Dardanelles). The 1st Bn. were there until January 1916. The war diary for the period is here - http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documen...p;resultcount=6 and can be downloaded for £3.50. Great value for all you get - "29 DIVISION , 87 INFANTRY BRIGADE : Headquarters 1915 Jan. - 1916 Feb./ 1 Battalion Border Regiment 1915 Jan. - 1916 Feb./ 1 Battalion Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers 1915 Jan. - 1916 Feb. / 1 Battalion Kings Own Scottish Borderers 1914 Sept. - 1916 Feb. / 2 Battalion South Wales Borderers 1915 Mar. - 1916 Feb." The war diaries very rarely name individual OR's but will certainly give you a feel for what your man was involved in. The ward diary covering the period of his death is here - http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documen...p;resultcount=6 John
LloydUK Posted 5 November , 2009 Author Posted 5 November , 2009 Thanks alot for all the help, I will certainly look into buying that war diary . Many Thanks again, Lloyd
