high wood Posted 5 November , 2009 Author Share Posted 5 November , 2009 Thanks Doug, your help is much appreciated. Here are some pictures from the album. This one is Jasper on a route march. The signpost points towards Totland something and Alum Bay in the direction of the march and towards Freshwater Bay at right angles to it. The cap badges are not clear but appear to be DCLI which would make this the 3rd (reserve) battalion who were based at Freshwater between May 1915 and the end of the war. high wood Posted 5 November , 2009 Author Share Posted 5 November , 2009 "Jasper" may have been Second Lieutenant Jasper George Olivier, 3rd Btn attached 7th Btn, DCLI, KiA 16th September 1916. Ashey might have been Second Lieutenant Edwin Ashurst Grigg, DCLI. There is an Olive Grigg, Servant, 16, House Maid Domestic, born Advent, Cornwall in the 1911 census entry for the Hoblyn family. This may of course be a coincidence and nothing more. Tremonie might in fact be Iremonie and could possibly be the nick name of Lieutenant John Atherwood Iremonger Watts, DCLI. high wood Posted 6 November , 2009 Author Share Posted 6 November , 2009 Doug, thank you for your continuing help with this. I have a separate thread on the DCLI officers mentioned in the album in the soldiers section of this forum and it is begining to make a case that Jasper George Olivier is the young officer in the album. Do you have any thoughts on Edwin Ashurst Grigg being Ashey and John Atherwold (Atlewold) Iremonger Watts being Iremonie? Simon.

I am less comfortable with Iremonie for Watts though - it is not something that I personally would use as a nickname when you could settle for John or Watty. high wood Posted 6 November , 2009 Author Share Posted 6 November , 2009 Doug, Edwin Ashurst Grigg being aged 9 in 1901 would be age 24 in 1916 so he is of the right age. I will need to find out if he served with the 3rd battalion DCLI in 1916 in order to place him in Freshwater. Simon.

I am not entirely convinced either but I cannot find any other connection with an officer in the DCLI based on the word that appears in the album. The capital letter looks very similar to the J in Jasper and I had read it as a T but I would be a possibility. With all the captions in the album, the card pages have acted like blotting paper and made the writing less distinct. Simon.
