Northumberland Yeomanry

Hi all, I have just purchased a pair and SWB to Pte J.C.Drabble of the Northumberland Yeomanry.

The number on the medals is 275551. Can anyone tell me where private Drabble came from. Best Regards..

It is likely that he was a latecomer to the War as the number is part of the 1917 series used in the re-numbering of Yeomanry units. His Medal Index Card shows only that number,which tells me that,unlike soldiers already serving and with a number in an earlier series,and who would have received a new number 27----,he took his from the first day of service.

His Silver War Badge list ref is CY/586 by the way. You might get more info by looking at that.

Have you lookd for him on the Pension records in Ancestry UK ? He might have got a pension,having been discharged with wounds/sickness.

The only John C DRABBLE born in E&W between about 1870 and 1900 is John Charles, born in Worksop district in Q2 1895.

Son of Thomas A and Clara of South Carlton St, Carlton in Lindrick, Notts (1901). Still there in 1911 as a 16yo Garden Boy.

The number belongs to the Nottinghamshire Yeomanry, not the Northumberland...

270001 275000 Northumberland Yeomanry Corps of Hussars.

Thankyou all. It is a bit of a puzzle though as the medals are stamped Northl`d Yeo ! Maybe a typing error, they were literally stamping thousands ao medals as you know. Again Thankyou.

The MIC indicates North'd Yeo.

He is not in the list of wounded or gassed in the Northumberland Yeomanry history by Pease.
