gerard Posted 2 November , 2009 Posted 2 November , 2009 Can anyone please advise me when in 1916 were the territorials renumbered?my great uncle was a pre war territorial Glasgow highlander 1644, renumbered 330177 if been told somtime in 1916 but when.I know this is an odd question but it will help me to place him during the Great war. Thanks GERARD
Tony Lund Posted 2 November , 2009 Posted 2 November , 2009 Weldon, William Highland Light Infantry 1644 Private Highland Light Infantry 330177 Private The numbers 330001 to 355000 were allocated to the 8th Battalion, Highland Light Infantry. I think this was early in 1917, but I do not know with certainly, Glasgow is well outside my own area. Tony.
Muerrisch Posted 2 November , 2009 Posted 2 November , 2009 The actual renumbering was supposed to occur 1 March 1917, the numbers were known late 1916.
PPCLI Posted 3 November , 2009 Posted 3 November , 2009 The numbers 330001 to 355000 were allocated to the 8th Battalion, Highland Light Infantry. Hi Tony, The above information is incorrect - did you get it from the Long, Long Trail? This block was actually assigned to the 9th Battalion, the Glasgow Highlanders. All the HLI renumbering information on the LLT is wrong, it should be: 200001-240000 4 5 240001-280000 5 6 280001-305000 6 7 305001-330000 7 8 330001-355000 8 9 355001-380000 9 21 As stated, the official date of change to 6-digit numbers for infantry was 1st March 1917. Cheers, Stuart
Andrew Hesketh Posted 3 November , 2009 Posted 3 November , 2009 LLT also had an error for the territorial battalions of the Sherwood Foresters last time I checked.
Northern Soul Posted 3 November , 2009 Posted 3 November , 2009 As stated, the official date of change to 6-digit numbers for infantry was 1st March 1917. Agreed Stuart, although I think in reality some of the Territorial Associations stole a bit of a march on this date. Evidence suggests that the King's Own Royal Lancaster Regiment certainly did, as there are men in the 1st/4th Battalion (and the Home Service analogues) who died up-to six or seven weeks before this date who got renumbered - and they don't fall into the "missing in action" category. Either that or it took a very long time indeed for their deaths to be reported back to the TFCA (which I doubt). Best wishes. Andy.
PPCLI Posted 3 November , 2009 Posted 3 November , 2009 I quite agree, Andy. I'm sure the new numbers were worked out at least several weeks in advance of the official use date. That line in my reply was more to confirm to Gerard that since his great uncle's MIC gives his 6-digit number, then he was still on the regiment's nominal roll on 1st March 1917. Andy H - I think the Foresters' info was corrected a little while ago. I did send a couple of messages regarding the HLI details but never received a reply. Cheers, Stuart
jay dubaya Posted 4 November , 2009 Posted 4 November , 2009 ACI 2414 which lists the allotment of the 6 digit TF numbers is dated 23rd December 1916. Jon
