Remembered Today:

13th Royal Scots

I was wondering if anyone knows if the cap badge of the 13th Battalion Royal Scots was marked up as such.

I have seen some badges for other Royal Scots Battalions with their number cast into the badge but have never seen one for the 13th & so wondered if they were ever made with the 13th on them or if they were never marked as such.

Additionally I wondered if the design changed over the period of the war, for instance were badges initially issued with battalion numbers only to be dropped later on with recruits being issued "plain" Regimental badges?

If a uniform or badge speciallist knows the answer I would be pleased to hear from them,

many thanks

Rod,

If you check out the Photo Gallery Section of John Duncans's Web-site-Newbattle at War-you will see period photos of Royal Scots from most Battalions.

I can't see much difference in their Cap Badges but a second opinion is always welcome.

I think the badges with numbers you have seen are the pre 1908 Volunteer Bn badges. In 1908 these became the Territorial Bns.

There was only ever one design of bi-metal Royal Scots cap badge in WW1. It had no numerals and the 13th Bn and all other Service war-raise bns would have worn this one. In 1916 an all brass version was authorised to reduce labour costs in the manufacture. Your Bn might have seen some of these.

The exception was the Territorial Bns (the former VBs) as the 4th and 5th Battalions had a completely different pattern all white metal badge.

Hi,

as a follow on to my original question I wondered if the 13th Royal Scots would wear the badge on any particular backing cloth & if so what would it be, plain colour or regimental tartan?

many thanks

Rod,

If you type in Royal Scots you'll find the Regiment has a web-site,and a Forum.

Worth going straight to "the Horse's mouth"?

Somebody will probably come along with the answer,it's a pity ,though, all the Royal Scots Cap Badge photos are in Black and White :D
