morrish Posted 31 October , 2009 Posted 31 October , 2009 I have the entry in the london gazette, for my grandfathers DCM. 805238 Sgt M.L. Ridge B/231st (N Mid) Bde RFA TF stoke on trent. It states that the battery where positioned near a place called Levercuier. I have tried searching for "Levercuier" but it doesn't show up on any maps, can anyone help identify where this is
Chris Noble Posted 31 October , 2009 Posted 31 October , 2009 Hi. Are you sure of the spelling? I think it should read myself Le Verguier. North of St Quentin. Kindest regards. Chris.
Chris Noble Posted 31 October , 2009 Posted 31 October , 2009 Just to the west of Riqueval. Chris. Apologies. I nearly got confused with my east from west!
shred Posted 31 October , 2009 Posted 31 October , 2009 Hi, Agree with Chris, many of the towns and villages mentioned for the Battle of Cambrai are there abouts. Link to google maps. Garry
IPT Posted 31 October , 2009 Posted 31 October , 2009 Hi. Are you sure of the spelling? I think it should read myself Le Verguier. North of St Quentin. Kindest regards. Chris. Seems to be the one. Comes up as Levergies on Google maps.
Chris Noble Posted 31 October , 2009 Posted 31 October , 2009 Hi. Just pulled this off the bookcase, Riqueval by K.W. Mitchinson, the Battleground Europe Series. A handy guide if visiting the area morrish. The following is regarding the build up of artillery in the valleys to the west of Ste. Helene and you may find this of some interest; 'An intensive barrage lasting 48 hours would be fired by divisional and corps guns before the infantry went over. Harrasing fire began on German positions on 26 September, and on the following day was supplemented by the increasingly intensive programme. Two 6-inch batteries were ordered to rest by day and fire one round per minute at night on the canal banks and Bellenglise. 18-pdr guns of 230 Brigade RFA fired 100 rounds per gun on two successive days; 4.5-inch howitzers of 231 Brigade expended 150 rounds per day.' All the best. Chris.
