Krstyna Posted 31 October , 2009 Posted 31 October , 2009 I have been researching the 3 Rumsey brothers KIA . What I have found out; Harry Rumsey. Age 26 Private 4th Bn. Suffolk Reg: Service No: 200351 date of death 27/09/1917 Grave /Memorial Ref. Panel 40-41 and162-162a Tyne Cot Memorial. son of George and Sarah Ann Rumsey, The Mill, Brundish, Framlingham Suffolk. On his Medal Roll it says Theatre of War, Aldershot. Frederick Rumsey Age 24 Private 1st.Bn. Essex Reg: Service No:27932 date of death 09/12/1916 Grave/Memorial Ref: Pier and Face 10 D Thiepval Memorial son the same as above but also husband of Jessie May Rumsey nee Pipe and father of Frederick, 9 months old aprox. Medal Roll also says Theatre of War Aldershot Albert George Rumsey Age 23 Lance Corporal 26th Bn. Royal Fusiliers. Service No: 47386 date of death 28/09/1917 Grave/Memorial Ref: I. J. 15. Godewaersvelde British Cemetery Son as before. Medal Roll also says Theatre of War Aldershot So , got that far, but no service records yet, I belong to Ancestry, (full subs:) and I think its not so good as it was, would not give me anything on these 3. I believe William Rumsey (1891 aprox:) Granddad , was also there but survived. It was him who told me about them yrs. ago! Where was the Theatre "Aldershot" ?? Any help will be welcome, also any photos of memorials. Thankyou, Krystyna
josquin Posted 31 October , 2009 Posted 31 October , 2009 Krystyna, Aldershot was one of the main Army bases in the U.K., in Hampshire, that Ancestry.com frequently lists incorrectly as a Theatre of War. The correct theatre for the three brothers is probably "Flanders/France." Regards Trelawney
ralphjd Posted 31 October , 2009 Posted 31 October , 2009 Krystyna. As Trelawney has said Ancestry have made a boob of the Theatre of War on SDGW, as a member of said company you can download the medal cards for all three of these men Harry went to France 8-11-1914, Albert George 17-11-1915 and Fred has no date suggesting he went after January 1916, all three on Ancestry should read France and Flanders. Regards Ralph.
roughdiamond Posted 31 October , 2009 Posted 31 October , 2009 Krystyna There are 7 William Rumsey's on the National Archives medal cards plus others with middle initials, did your Granddad have a middle name? Edited to note only one of those 7 is listed on the CWGC site, so that leave's 6 possibles. Sam
ralphjd Posted 31 October , 2009 Posted 31 October , 2009 Krystyna. The War Graves Project have photos of all three, cost £3 each via email, but member Anthony Bagshaw of the British War Graves photographic site may have them also and his are FREE !! Good Luck. Ralph.
Krstyna Posted 2 November , 2009 Author Posted 2 November , 2009 Hi All, Thankyou for replies. I will contact Antony and see if he has photos. I have got the tickets for going to Flanders on the 10th but the health isn't good again so will delegate grandad Rumsey to take Joe! I find it appalling that the theatre of war is still Aldershot, why haven't they corrected it? William Rumsey, born 1889 doesn't appear to have another christian name, I also found John Rumsey, born 1884, his oldest brother, I'd forgotten about him, I don't think he went to the war. As far as I know, 3 brothers died and are also on the church memorial at Brundish, William I know survived,John??? Krystyna
rksimpson Posted 2 November , 2009 Posted 2 November , 2009 Hi Here is Harry's MIC from Ancestry- no mention of theatre of war on the card? As said before ignore what they say about Aldershot on their SDGW cards- found all 3 on Ancestry. You should find other 2 as easy- just tried and found both, but no Service Records for any of them - remember 2/3 of them were destroyed in WW2 unfortunately. regards Robert
