Return from India

I am trying to establish when the following arrived back in UK from India, where they had spent the war:

1/4 Queens, 1/4 & 2/4 Border Regt, 1/4 Royal West Kents, 2/5 Somerset Light Infantry, 2/4 Wilts, 2/4 Duke of Corjwall's Light Infantry

It was probably late 1919 or early 1920.

Any information most gratefully received.

Hi

From 2/4 Wilts in India:

The 2/4 Wilts left India at noon on 21st March 1919 on board the "Herefordshire"

"A Srange War" relates that the majority of the 2/5 SLI were still in India in October 1919, having been delayed by the 3rd Afghan War. 13 Officers & 122 men sailed on the Nevesa about the 21st October arriving in England on November 16th. The "1914" men sailed soon after

Again, most grateful. I am coming to the conclusion that all the TF bns which served in India throughout the war were back in UK before the end of 1919. The majority did take part in the Afghan War, much, I suspect, to their annoyance, given that many of their mates in other theatres had been demobilised by then.

Some of the 2/5th SLI stayed on afterwards as advisors etc. A number taught Indian Army men to drive the heavy lorries that the Indian Army had recently bought (at a cost of about £1000 each....bit steep that for 1919!!).

I should imagine they had few commitments at home

Piece of information for you.

I have been recently looking at the service of a member of the 1/4 Border Regiment.

He came back to Carlisle in 1919, I have a postcard of the troopship he came back in it was the HM Troopship Prinz Hubertus.

On the reverse he states "here is the old tub we came back in"

1/4th Queen’s left Bombay on 18 October 1919 aboard the Konigin Luise and landed in Plymouth on the night of 12 November.
