Downsworth and Ellis both look like good cases to me, maybe also Elliffe though it's not clear cut.

As noted above:

"Dervis" listed on CWGC as DEWIS: https://www.cwgc.org/find-war-dead/casualty/1629890/dewis,-walter-george-stephen/

"W D" Dunn possibly Thomas William: https://www.cwgc.org/find-war-dead/casualty/1630586/dunn,-thomas-william/

Charles Francis Elvis 6522 West Riding Regiment, pension card says he died on 30 March 1917 from cardiac disease but his service record is clear that this was not casued by service.

Fairbrother looks good per the evidence posted previously.

No firm leads on Fisher.

Can't see any POW records for Geddes. Cpl Leonard Robert Geddes 10976 RFA otherwise looks like a good fit, died on 7 November 1918 infulenza & pneumonia but no service record and it's not clear if he was in service or not at the time. Death was registered at Coventry.

J Gillespie, the only North Staffs man I can find with this name is John Gillespie 50721 who was a POW discharged in 1919 and suffering from recurring malaria due to service, not clear when he died though. Otherwise, different regiment but Horace John Gillespie (aka Jack Gillespie) S/24440 Rifle Brigade who had a Coventry connection and was discharged late 1916 with paraplegia due to a GSW to the spine, later died in 1917: https://www.cwgc.org/find-war-dead/casualty/2905713/gillespie,-horace-john/

Gough also looks like a promising case, TB aggravated by service.

James Henry Grazher 39600 Royal Warwicks died 22 October 1924, not 1916, death registered at Tamworth.

Haddon, possibly George Henry Haddon 13089 Oxford & Bucks, enlisted at Coventry and kia on that date. Pension records identify him as Fred Haddon (enlisted as G H Haddon), son of George Henry Haddon of Lower Weyford, Weedon, Northants. Listed on CWGC: https://www.cwgc.org/find-war-dead/casualty/857275/haddon,-george-henry/

No leads on G Handley.

John Harold William Hastings M2/120145 ASC, discharged with chronic pulmonary tuberculosis aggravated by exposure on active service. Another promising case.

William John Hemmings 8958 4th Dragoon Guards (Royal Irish), an IFCP case accepted in 2011: https://www.cwgc.org/find-war-dead/casualty/75229479/hemmings,-william-john/

There's a pre-war record for Harry Hill 3171 Cheshire Reg. with the same birth details but no clues regarding any later service.

Hinchcliffe listed on CWGC as HENCHCLIFFE: https://www.cwgc.org/find-war-dead/casualty/508687/henchcliffe,-thomas-william/

HODGKINS, Private, James. 2nd Bn., Sherwood Foresters. Died 1915 at Boulogne. Resided 27, Cox Street.

HOLTON, Private, Thomas. Killed in action, 1915. Resided 7c. Greyfriars Lane.

HUTCHINSON, W. J. Northumberland Fusiliers. Railway Labourer, Coventry Station. Enlisted August, 1914.

IRELAND, Private, C. M. Killed in action, France, 1917. Born 1881. Resided 9, Gas Street.

JEACOCK, Sergeant, Royal Field Artillery. F. Died after recovering from being a prisoner in Germany.

JONES, Bombardier, Percy. Royal Field Artillery. Born Coventry. Resided Coventry. Photo Engraver.

Commemorated Iliffe & Sons Ltd Memorial.

James Hodgkins 399645 Labour Corps, ex Sherwood Foresters, of 8 Swanswell Terrace, Coventry. Discharged with mental instability aggravated by service and died at home on 6 October 1919. The Cox Street address is in his papers so it's the right man, clearly not died at Boulogne. Don't know how easy such cases are though.

Holton already identified as Thomas Arthor Holton 2182 Royal Warwicks, d. 25 September 1915, the only known casualty who fits the above details: https://www.cwgc.org/find-war-dead/casualty/732138/holton,-thomas-arthur/

Hutchinson, nothing definite, the only match I can find is William Jackson Hutchinson 251555 Labour Corps, ex Northumberland Fusiliers, but he was from Newcastle and may not have been a casualty.

Ireland, no trace despite a notice of death in the Coventry paper with the above details. Charles Mead Ireland 039507 RASC and C M (Charles Mark?) Ireland 9284 Essex Regiment are the only matching names I can find, but both appear to have died at home well outside the qualifying period.

Jeacock, inclined to think that this is Frank Jeacock 12187 RAF who was a POW and later died at home: https://www.cwgc.org/find-war-dead/casualty/403056/jeacock,-frank/

Jones, nothing obvious.

Harry Lancaster Jukes 87115 RGA already identified: https://www.cwgc.org/find-war-dead/casualty/142645/jukes,-/

Mallon already identified at Edward John MELLON: https://www.cwgc.org/find-war-dead/casualty/897376/mellon,-/

John Smith Matheson (or Matherson) 16540 Scots Guards, discharged in 1917 with chronic [something] inflammation of lungs aggravated by ordinary recruits training. Looks like a maybe.

Arthur Mewis 14129 KRRC, a Birmingham man born in 1891 according to his pension ledger, discharged in 1917 suffering from neurasthenia. Appears to have died in 1945.

Charles Morris already identified as EDWARD Morris whose regiment and date of death match the above: https://www.cwgc.org/find-war-dead/casualty/854684/morris,-edward/

Charles Norman Muston G/17848 Royal West Kent, pension ledger gives disability as GSW knee and fractured femur, both attributed to service but neither seems likely to have contributed to his death. A four page service record gives no further insight.

William Patrick 2295 Royal Warwicks, died 9 September 1916. Discharged on 12 January 1916 with tubercle of lung caused by exposure on active service, so another case worth looking at.

Victor James Payne 265925 Royal Warwicks, discharged on 18 January 1918, disability was a shell wound and compound fracture of [something?] both attributed to service. Died 13 January 1921 apparently from septicemia, so possibly related? No service record though.

John Price 75547 RFA, captured at Mons in 1914 and died on 9 April 1918 just days after discharge. Remarkably a copy of his DC was with his service papers, details now sent to IFCP.

TOWNSEND, Mark. Killed in action, 12th August, 1916. Born 4th April, 1894. Resided Coventry. Railway Porter. Enlisted May, 1915.

No trace of anyone named "Silsworth", military or otherwise. CWGC lists 14 Oxford & Bucks casualties on that date, 12 of them with the 5th. Of those, only one enlisted at Coventry according to SDGW, that was William Antsey (or Antsee) 11162: https://www.cwgc.org/find-war-dead/casualty/925519/anstey,-william/

Smith already identified as Samuel Arthur Smith 91889 RFA: https://www.cwgc.org/find-war-dead/casualty/566324/smith,-samuel-arthur/

Benjamin Sproule 211135 Royal Navy, invalided on 15 March 1917 with neurasthenia.

George Henry Tinsley TR/8/12093 Oxford & Bucks 36th Training Reserve Bn. Discharged with tubercle of lung aggravated by exposure on ordinary military service.

Townsend could be one of two men...

Frederick Townsend 18423 Royal Warwicks was killed on that date but he was from Bampton in Oxfordshire: https://www.cwgc.org/find-war-dead/casualty/816856/townsend,-frederick/

Alternatively, Mark Townsend R/12853 King's Royal Rifle Corps was killed on 15 July 1916 but was apparently born in 1894 and he is listed in Railwaymen Died In The Great War as a goods porter at Coventry: https://www.cwgc.org/find-war-dead/casualty/272754/townsend,-mark/

Can't find anyone who matches Tuckwell's details. CWGC lists 11 KOSB casualties on that date, but none named Tuckwell and no Serjeants.

Ward already identified as Joseph Charles Ward 62066 RFA: https://www.cwgc.org/find-war-dead/casualty/575276/ward,-/

George Edward Wheeler 11841 RWF, there's a comment above saying "Discharge due to ulcerated leg (not due to or aggravated by service)" but I don't see this in his service papers or anywhere else. Pension ledger gives disability as hemiplegia attributed to service, pension card says he died on 19 December 1920 from thrombosis of cerebral vessels. I'm no expert on head injuries, but maybe a case here?

Horace Whitmill 840714 RFA, pension card gives date of death as 27 January 1921. Discharged with tubercle of lung attributed to service.

Cecil Woodward 614255 RHA, no service record but ledger states neurasthenia attributed to service and this was also apparently the cause of death.

The two Blake brother have now been put forward by IFCP. I don't have the burial record but according to a family tree on Ancestry they are buried with their father at Coventry (London Road) Cemetery, section 201 grave 189.

Incidentally, while searching for details of London Road Cemetery I found the following document with details of some of the war graves and family memorials there: https://www.familyhistorydiggers.com/coventry-cemetery-great-war-burials

This turned up a further two names, James Beeston and Joseph Jordan, though I can't see a case for either as non-coms.

Scratch this one. Death was registered at Coventry in 1922, according to the pension records he died on 6 May 1922. Disability was pulm tb but does not seem to be attributable to service.

Still no decision on Percival William Blake, or on John Price which was the other case I put forward.

There are still quite a few decent non-com cases to be found in this topic should anyone be interested.

That may well be the case but it can often seem discouraging/unhelpful to have so many men listed at once with all the posts added piecemeal so that the track of research and progress is not readily clear.  A shame really.

In my opinion it is always to be recommended that each man is entered in his own separate thread = I would strongly recommend/suggest that approach for potential cases in the future.

Having had more time to look at Harry Bissell's records it would appear that it is all down to the Death Certificate. There is no mention of being gassed and his illness (basically coronary disease) is described as constitutional, although it is acknowledged that the condition had been aggravated by his military service. If the DC records that he died of coronary disease then you might have a case.

Harry Bissell is no good, his disability was VDH (mitral stenosis, aortic insufficiency), however DC gives cause of death as lobar pneumonia & heart failure. It makes no mention of military service or of him being gassed. Informant was his brother, Pte W Bissell.

This turned up a further two names, James Beeston and Joseph Jordan, though I can't see a case for either as non-coms.

I can't see the source details or if these were followed through elswhere but would offer a suggestion:

From WFA/Fold3 ...

Pension index card: James BEESTON, 8463, 3rd Bn Royal Warwickshire Regiment - unspecified disability claim - awarded 5/6 pw from 8-3-19 to 9-9-19 [under the 1918 RW the 20% disability rate for a pension Class V soldier or Pte or a NCO with a Service pension] Died 14.3.20

PICs x 2 for his widow Ada's claim shows him as CSM, 3rd Bn - died 19.3.20 Debility after F AS, myalgia in hips - originally seems Rejected as Disease which caused the soldier's deat neither contracted and aggravated by active service but these two entries have been struck-through on the PIC. Address 3 Windsor St, Coventry

Edit: Find a Grave offers ...  James, husband of Ada https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/252416081/james-beeston
