Some of them look as though they might.

However, you need more information. You have to prove that their cause of death within the qualifying period was related to their service in the same period. Therefore you need to know their cause of death (death certificate required) and usually the reason for their discharge (servoce/pension record required). Sometimes the DC will provide the link on its own where it may mention an obvious war cause but often it will not.

Simply having served and dying after discharge is not a reason for qualification.

BROWNHILL is already commemorated by CWGC.

He is listed under the name of BROUNHILL - a spelling confirmed to CWGC by the NoK.

Brownhill is commemorated - the CWGC have his surname spelled incorrectly and Terry Denham should be able to sort that out very quickly:

BROUNHILL, CLIFFORD HENRY

Initials: C H

Nationality: United Kingdom

Rank: Private

Regiment/Service: Suffolk Regiment

Unit Text: 2nd Bn.

Age: 21

Date of Death: 02/08/1918

Service No: 44185

Additional information: Son of Harry and Ellen Brounhill, of Birmingham.

Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead

Grave/Memorial Reference: III. F. 6.

Cemetery: SANDPITS BRITISH CEMETERY, FOUQUEREUIL

As regards the others, what supporting evidence have you been able to gather? For my own part, when I attempt to get a man commemorated who had died after discharge I try and find Pension Records which show the cause of discharge and whether or not the illness or circumstances for which the man was discharged were attributable to, or exacerbated by, his military service. Then I get the Death Certificate and see if the cause of death matches what he was discharged for. These seem to be the essential criteria for getting a man accepted for commemoration.

I have had a quick look to see if Pension Records exist for the men. There are a set for Harry Bissell, but (admittedly at a glance), they do not seem definite and so a good DC match-up would be required. I can't find any obvious matches for Percy Blake or Blundell and the other two won't have records on Ancestry (officer/sailor).

Best wishes.

Andy.

Edit: looks like I was beaten to it !!

Charles Patrick Blake looks like a good bet (found his Pension records on Ancestry)

He was discharged as a consequence of TB, which had been contracted while he was serving and so, if his Death certificate confirms TB as the cause of death (which is highly likely since he died only four months or so after discharge) then I am pretty sure he will be accepted for commemoration.

Although there are no Pension Records for Percy Blake there is circumstantial evidence that he may have a reasonable case for being commemorated. He was discharged on 19.2.18 and if he died on 8.5.18 then he had only been out of the Army about 11 weeks. This might suggest a connection - but, as stated before, the Death Certificate will be needed........and hopefully it will confirm that he died as a result of wounds or an illness likely to have first manifested itself when he was in the Army (DC may say Army Pensioner as occupation). If his death was due to say, TB, then I think this would qualify him because the illness doesn't take hold that quickly as far as I know.

Having had more time to look at Harry Bissell's records it would appear that it is all down to the Death Certificate. There is no mention of being gassed and his illness (basically coronary disease) is described as constitutional, although it is acknowledged that the condition had been aggravated by his military service. If the DC records that he died of coronary disease then you might have a case.

Re Cecil Blundell I have a Pensions record that confirms his service but he was discharged as an underage enlistement; he was RFA & not DCLI. The address on his records matches up with the one you have given so did he re enlist at some point; if so was it under an assumed name

many thanks for the help on these men and likely places to look, i only loaded upto Dawson and have about another sixty coventry men to Z.

I have a read through the info I have .

Charles Patrick Blake was given a military funeral have pictures of his coffin surrounded and being wheeled by colleagues.

I have corrected my records for Brounhill never of thought of that surname.

For Blundell i'll search my data for the same address and see if anything matches does it say how old he was.

Youngest coventry army casualty was 15.

Horace Ellis was discharged suffering from TB aggravated by service, so again, get his DC, and if it shows his cause of death to be TB then he will probably be eligible for commemoration. Papers on Ancestry.

William Elliffe has papers on Ancestry. Although I personally would take a chance and submit his case for consideration, it is doubtful whether he would be accepted for commemoration. Although he was discharged suffering with TB the records unequivocally state that it was not caused by or aggravated by service (although how anyone could have stated that with such certainty is beyond me).

There is no Medal Index Card for a Frank Elvis in the Duke of Wellington's, so either his surname is mispelled or he served under a different name.

Papers on Ancestry for Harry Downsworth. Looks as if he was discharged with V.D.H. - vascular disease of the heart(?). He was discharged on 18.10.18 so he'd only been out of the Army a couple of weeks. "Deceased" is stamped on his papers several times. I would say he stands a good chance of being commemorated.

ELVIS, Private, Frank. West Riding Regiment. Died (Home) wounds received at Mons in 1914, 28th March, 1917. Born 10th November, 1883 at Coventry. Resided at Coventry. Telegraph Messenger. Grave Ref. Handsworth Cemetery.

Apart from the "telegraph messenger" and "wounds received at Mons" bits, this could very easily be Frank ELVIS:

6522 Charles Francis ELVIS, West Riding Regiment. Born Francis Charles Samuel ELVIS in Coventry Q4 1883, married Bessie TURNER in W.Bromwich (probably Handsworth) Q2 1915, death registered in Birmingham Q2 1917 age 33 (indexed as Francis C ELVIS, 6d 236).

In 1911 a Coal Miner/Hewer lodging with the PERKINS family at 60 Wellhead Lane, Perry Bar, Handsworth.

He has Pension and Service papers filed under Charles Francis Elvis.

Served in WRR from 1900 to 1912 (in Reserve from 1908), including South Africa and India.

Reenlisted WRR 25/10/1912, discharged nlpf 17/10/14.

Report from 1st Northern General Hospital dated 15/9/14: Disability Heart Disease, Aortic Regurgitation. "Patient can give no information on history of his condition. He was in the Army & served for seven years abroad. He left the Army in 1908 & has worked as a Collier ever since. He has never had any sickness. He contracted Syphilis in 1902 in India. Was treated for 9 months. In my opinion military service has taken no part in the production of his condition."

Doesn't look like he got to Mons after all.
