No mention of Sergeant on his MIC below, it may have been post war, also it says he transferred to the Yorkshire Light Infantry. Which census do you mean? the last one available is 1911, do you mean Voters Roll?

Hi your man became 38539 Yorkshire Light Infantry but it does not suggest he reached the rank of sergeant. A quick look at CWGC website suggests that he survived as no Joseph Boyds appeared in the Debt of Honour

Hi

Here is his MIC

IT says in the remarks Class Z which means he was demobilised after the war and thus survived. No mention of Sergeant. Maybe he got promoted and then demoted. Not sure if service records would have that info or battalion war records??

regards

Robert

Hi Thanks for the information, on his Victory medal and war medal it says Sgt, R.Scots so I would assume he got promoted then demobed, Can I ask why would a soldier go from a Scottish Regiment to an English one?

Robert,

The 1914/15 Royal Scots Star Roll may give details of Battalion your man went abroad with.May mean a visit to Kew.

As regards, change of Regiment,he may have been wounded, become sick, etc and returned to UK then reposted to a Regiment that required replacement troops.

I notice on the MIC that there is no rank against Yorkshire Light Infantry and even though the YLI comes after the Royal Scots, the MIC is annotated with an * against Royal Scots for his Victory and British War medal, I'd venture he was promoted and moved to the YLI than went back to the Royal Scots and his service number with them, hence the medals being R. Scots.

What is on his 1915 Star Steven?

Steven,

I note the 11th and 12th Royal Scots landed in France in May 1915.

He could, however, been a replacement to one of the other Royal Scots Battalions already serving in France.

I think a trip to Kew to inspect the 1914/15 Medal Roll will give the answer.

I know the 8th Battalion 1914 Star Roll listed all men entitled to the Medal but I don't know if the 1914/15 Star Rolls are compiled in Battalion order.

The Victory and War Medal Roll may also give details of Battalion served in.

George
