Alfred's numbers and date of arrival in Egypt (31-8-1915) would suggest that he originally served with the 2/7th Battalion of the Middlesex Regiment...

The Middlesex Regiment

2/7th Battalion

Formed at Hornsey in September 1914 as a second line unit. Moved to Barnet and then Egham, where attached to 2/Middlesex Brigade (201st), 2/Home Counties Division (67th). Left the Division in February 1915 and moved to Gibraltar.

August 1915: moved to Egypt. Formed part of the Western Frontier Force.

May 1916 : moved to France, arriving Marseilles on 15 May 1916. Whole Bn went into quarantine camp for Typhus.

Disbanded in France on 10 June 1916, whereupon the 3/7th Bn in England (see below) was retitled the 2/7th.

He presumably went elswhere after the battalion was disbanded, and his medal roll record at the National Archives should give you that imformation.

According to his medal index card, he was a Colour Sergeant, appointed as one of the battalions 4 Company Quartermaster Sergeants, by the way.

EDIT: His service record survives and is on Ancestry....

Lorraine

2548 Company Quartermaster Sergeant who went to Egypt, landing there on 31.8.1915 with the 2/7 Battalion, duties with the Western Front Force.

Later 200581 Colour Sergeant. The new number was issued in 1917 in the Territorial Force re-numbering exercise, and was issued to the 7th Battalion.

His Medal Index Card shows he was entitled to three campaign medals, the 1914-15 Star,British War and Victory Medals. The card has a note marked "Dism" whatever that might mean. Dismissed springs to mind. You might get augmentation of this on the original Medal Roll at Kew.

Dism would be "Disembodied" though his WO364 record states that he was discharged with a pension due to deafness that he suffered from from March 1916 onwards in Egypt. The deafness was in some way attributable to his service, but the writing on the form definitely belongs to a doctor!

He transferred to the 1st/7th battalion on disbandment of the 2/7th:

He served with the 1/7th Before returning to the UK for home service at the beginning of 1918 before going back across the channel to serve in the Army of Occupation on the Rhine:
