paulowen Posted 24 October , 2009 Posted 24 October , 2009 Has anyone been watching this auction for a first pattern Brodie helmet? It's gone to over a Grand! From the pictures it seems to have an unusual lining, with the oilcloth extending over the crown but ,apart from the strap ,looks quite ordinary. Is this one of the fabled 'magnetic' versions? I feel I'm missing something! http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vie...E:B:WNA:GB:1123
Wardog Posted 24 October , 2009 Posted 24 October , 2009 1st pattern liner and 1st type chinstrap- 2 part with buckle with prong. Out of touch with prices myself but looks in very good condition. Cheers, Paul.
trenchtrotter Posted 26 October , 2009 Posted 26 October , 2009 IMHO silly money!!!!! Know what price they will ask on the big dealers web pages now....some people!! TT
wainfleet Posted 30 October , 2009 Posted 30 October , 2009 I see the one on Regimentals website for £750 that was sitting there for a while has suddenly gone, I wonder why! No takers yet for the one at £885 with 58th Division and battalion signs, but maybe that's not so surprising as the reason most people want the first patt. is that it's the iconic Somme battle helmet, and 58 Div didn't get to F&F till Jan. 1917. A nuance evidently lost on this dealer, who also has a relatively common cloth 30 Div sign up as an "ultra rare Liverpool Pals patch" for £250! No doubt everyone will now be trying it on, and more of this pattern will go onto ebay. If a couple more go for the same money, then that will be "the price" from now on, but if not then hopefully this aberration will sink without trace. Otherwise such sanity as remains in this market will be hightailing it out the door.
trenchtrotter Posted 30 October , 2009 Posted 30 October , 2009 Wise words Wainfleet, I note your comments re the 58th helmet, however if I was happy with the paint I would be proud to have it in my collection. The £750 one disappeared some time ago if I recall correctly? I hope we are both wrong and sanity returns....who would have thought that helmets beat the recession!!!! TT
Dave G Posted 4 November , 2009 Posted 4 November , 2009 I've thought about this for several days and while I'm astonished by the price this helmet realized, certainly pricing me and many others out of the market, I'm also pleased that these original configuration helmets are being recognized for the rarities they are. This helmet is far rarer than most scarcer type WWII German helmets but it sold for less than half what an average condition German paratrooper helmet would have, though I certainly understand the contradictory nature of demand and rarity. I look forward to the forthcoming Marcus Cotton book (as I have for several years now!) and trust that his work will finally give the lowly Mk I series its due. All the best, Dave
