bruce Posted 20 October , 2009 Posted 20 October , 2009 A large percentage of those buried there are Canadians. hence both the name and the Canadian flag on the gate....... Bruce
Colin W Taylor Posted 20 October , 2009 Posted 20 October , 2009 Hi all. Just to ask, as i have archived with no result. Why is this Cemetery named, Canada backwards Thanks in advance. I've a feeling it's for just that reason. Looking through the CWGC there are also two CWGC graves at a place called Adanac in Saskatchewan Canada - however the two persons buried therin would seem to be local men who were reburied on their return so it was unlikely to be an area associated with the training of the Canadian Corps If I remember relatively nearby was Regina Trench which took the Canadian Corps a lot of effort and Casualties to capture during the later stages of the Battle of the Somme. I think it was merely an apt name for a cemetery where Canadians were concentrated for burial after the armistice.
peterhogg Posted 21 October , 2009 Posted 21 October , 2009 While there are a number of places and streets in Canada bearing the name, the origin of "adanac" is obscure. I believe it has been traced to the sport of lacrosse, though I have no idea why. At any rate, the name would not be unfamiliar to Canadians and certainly lacrosse would have been a familiar sport at the time. The word does evoke "Canada" for these reasons and would be a fitting name for a burial "home" far from home. I wish I could provide some definitive source but I cannot so this post must be taken with a grain of salt. peter
17107BM Posted 22 October , 2009 Author Posted 22 October , 2009 Hi all. Thanks for your replies. Although i was aware of the strong Canadian ties this cemetery has, i could find no information on why Canada reversed was used. Other than some reference to Saskatchewan on the CWM site. Cheers
