This was the 9th (Scottish) Division's HTMB. In October 1917 it was engaged in the First Battle of Passchendaele as part of XVIII Corps of 5th Army.

It became an element in VII Corps later, which fought in the series of Battles of Cambrai, but there is only one entry in the Long Long Trail for 9 Div actions and that is at Welsh Ridge on 17 December. There were other elements of VII Corps involved in all the phases of Cambrai,so you will have to see what the War Diary for 9HTMB says of it's day-to-day movements. The Diary is under WO95/1753,which covers all sizes of the Division's TMBs from Jun 1916 to Jan 1919.

cheers for that, which makes me wonder why the chap I am looking for Harry Knowles 12946 'V' Trench Mortar Battery RFA died 04/11/17 and is buried in Coxyde (korsijde) cemetery which as I understand was a rest camp area? I reside in Holland so guess i will have to wait until my next visit to NA to pull the war diaries.

again my thanks

I will take a look for you in the next week or so.

It may be that this period was indeed a rest time for the majority of the 9th Div prior to heading Cambrai way,it might explain why they weren't listed in Orbats for early Cambrai actions. Could he have died of wounds etc nearby ? We will see.

Just trolled through cemetery records for the week he died,no other arty boys of his unit, half a dozen Manchesters who were not 9th Div,so if the Div was at rest could be DOW or I have read the camp was occasionaly shelled? I shall be at KEW 22nd to look, anything you need while I'm there?

Thanks again
