paul.hickey Posted 9 October , 2009 Share Posted 9 October , 2009 my great uncle, Patrick M Guaran enlisted with the 6th Btn AIF in Melbourne on 17 August 1914 at the age of 19. His service record at the National Archives shows only that: he embarked on HMAT Honoraria 19 October 1914 he was "granted Commission in Imperial Army" B.R.List 84 "TFD. Commission in Imperial Army" undated There is reference to "Gazette No 29382 of 26 November 1915" whic (page 11882) shows that he was to be a temporary second Lieutenant with the Royal Munster Fusiliers wef 19 April 1915. On 21 May 1921 the War Office, London, wrote to the AIF concerning the medals of "Lieutenant P.M. Guaran, Royal Munster Fusiliers". At this point there is no other information available to me. Can anyone help please with the history of his appointment and subsequent service.

frev Posted 10 October , 2009 Share Posted 10 October , 2009 Hi Leo Can't help much further, other than to say that his British Medal Card shows that he was with the 2nd Royal Munster Regt. His British service record appears to be one of those that no longer exist. The ship he embarked from Australia on was actually the HMAT A20 Hororata (not Honoraria). (same ship as my G/U who was in the 7th Bn) He returned to Australia on the Sardinia, embarking in England 19/10/1918 & arriving in Melbourne 27/12/1918. (so both armistice & Christmas would have been celebrated on the ship) [Did you realise that his sister, Nancy, was a staff nurse with the AANS?] Good luck with your search. Cheers, Frev
Esskay Posted 10 October , 2009 Share Posted 10 October , 2009 His British records are available at the (UK) National Achives - http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalog...;accessmethod=0 Not digitised - but you can request the cost of having this done so you can read them from afar Cheers Sue
