Does anyone have any info on Lt Col PN Nissen DSO, inventor of the Nissen hut? Am I right in thinking he was Canadian? Does anyone know how he won his DSO?

Cheers

Simon

Nissen was a Canadian serving in the Royal Engineers and I think was a Captain at the time he 'invented' his huts. Maybe the RE Museum could help you.

Simon,

The website www.bartleby.com/61/47/N0114700.html gives under ‘Nissen Hut’ - Peter Norman Nissen (1871 – 1930) British army officer and mining engineer.

Nissen P N - born 1871, son of George H and Lavinia Nissen, married 1900 Louisa M Richmond, one daughter. Educated Trinity College, North Carolina and Queen's University, Kingston, Canada. Mining engineer and member of the Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. Inventor of Nissen Hut and Nissen Steel Tent. Chairman, Nissen Ltd. Mentioned in Despatches18/5/18 and 7/7/19. Awarded Order of St Sava 3rd Class. Temporary Capt and Acting Major RE. His DSO was gazetted on 15/2/17 and was for `distinguished services in the field with effect from 1/1/17'. I suspect it could have been for the invention of the Nissen Hut.
