GERMAN GREATCOAT

Hello Friends

I've found 10 years ago a military German greatcoat, it is a light blue-gray colourwith only one row of buttons.

It has stamped inside the date 1914 and the measures.

Someone told me that the buttons must have a crown on istead in my item they have little dots like the WWII German jacket.

Please let me know something about, i can send you photos to better understand the problem.

Thank you

Ciao

Paolo

Hi paolo,

prior to 1914, buttons on german greatcoats were brass, smooth. Crown buttons for greatcoats were introduced somewhere towards the end of 1914, so 1914 Mantels can have either the smooth (more probable) or crown buttons (more common on 1915 dated greatcoats). If the buttons have the dots, would (probably) indicate a postwar, either (Vorläufiger) Reichswehr or early Wehrmacht re-use. At the beginning of the war several types/models of greatcoat were in use: older types, mounted, dismounted..a (few) pictures would help...
