A link to three more casualties whose final resting place was listed as ‘Unknown’ for decades and who are now listed within the pages of this Forum.

https://www.canadianukgravesww1.co.uk/blog/

Stanley Barke, at: Manchester Southern Cemetery, Chorlton-cum-Hardy, Lancashire

Henry Brierley, at: St John Church, Abram, Lancashire

Fred Baron, at: Old West Cemetery, Darwen, Lancashire

The Memorial Wall in the Old West Cemetery at Darwen is a stunning and sobering sight.

Together with the three casualties we visited on the Isle of Man, may they all rest in peace.

Finally, the link to the final four casualties whose final resting place was listed as ‘Unknown’ for decades and who are listed within the pages of this Forum.

https://www.canadianukgravesww1.co.uk/blog/

Norman David Roberts, at: Fron Cemetery, Llangollen, Denbighshire

Thomas Owen Davies, at: St Cadfarch Church, Penegoes, Montgomeryshire

Frederick Charles Dakers, at: Penarth Cemetery, Penarth, Glamorganshire

James Robert Pullen, at: London Road Cemetery, Reading, Berkshire

It is a remarkable achievement that the CWGC have installed the markers for Roberts and Dakers less than 12 months after their final resting place was established.

As noted in our Blog, the final resting place for Pullen was established in December 2011, but unavoidable administrative problems delayed the installation of his headstone until 1st November 2018.

May they rest in peace.

As Chairman of Friends of Darwen Cemetery I would like to thank you for your comments on the Memorial Wall. We published a book that contains the biographies of the 79 casualties buried in the cemetery. This include 9 not yet recognised by the CWGC. Details of how to obtain copies of the book can be found on www.darwencemetery.org.uk

Although not reported on the Graves Registration Report Form, there is a reference to the Canadian believed to be buried in that cemetery with a date of death of 12 May 1921. THe note is in the far right column under the record for "Hebert".

We are pleased to report that the CWGC were able to finally commemorate the following two casualties before the current restrictions were imposed.

Joseph Palles Clark at: City of London & Tower Hamlets Cemetery, Mile End, London

The final resting place of Staff Sergeant Clark was first notified on 10 March 2014. His name was added to the Memorial Wall on 13 March 2020.

Henry Thomas Hobbs at: North Sheen Cemetery, Richmond, Surrey

The final resting place of Sapper Hobbs was first notified on 13 September 2018, following the transfer of his file from Ottawa to Maidenhead a few months previously. His CWGC headstone is now in place on Henry’s actual grave site.

We have photographs of both commemorations. There is one fascinating picture of the work in progress at Tower Hamlets & City of London.

May they both now rest in peace.

The Canadian War Museum at Ottawa has now added our Far From Project to their extensive catalogue and has posted a link at

https://www.warmuseum.ca/collections/archive/3179795

A partial extract of their post reads as follows:

Description

1 box (19.5 linear centimeters) : 102 county volumes ; 582 certificates ; 102 county profiles ; 1 database ; 40,000 photographs

Scope and Content

The Far From Home database provides a comprehensive profile for each of the 3902 men and women of the Canadian Expeditionary Force who died during the First World War and are commemorated in 872 locations throughout Great Britain. Included is the database of all 3902 casualties, detailed volumes of each county, hard copy General Record Office Certificates of the casualties, approximately 40,000 digital photographs of all FFH locations and graves, copies of basic research material consolidated as county profiles, and digital copies of miscellaneous primary source material.

The CWM has now printed up all 102 ‘County’ profiles in hard copy editions which are available for public access on the shelves of their library

Far From Home is now running in parallel with the Canadian War Museum’s own War Medals Collection project which can be found at:

https://www.warmuseum.ca/tilston-medals-collection/recipients/60386/

It is a great honour that our donation of Far From Home was accepted by the CWM and will permanently provide material for World War One researchers in the future

We will always remember and honour all 3902 casualties of the Great War who are buried and commemorated in Great Britain. May they rest in peace.

We are actively following up encouraging new leads in our search for two Canadian casualties:

Samuel McNeice aka McNiece (died 26 June 1919 at Antrim Road, Ballymena, County Antrim)

John Smith born Charles Brown (died 23 September 1920 at Bethnal Green Hospital, 214A Great Cambridge Road, Bethnal Green, London).

Samuel and John/Charles were both listed on the original Brookwood WW1 Memorial Wall but still do not have a known final resting place. Every other Canadian shown on that wall has been ‘found’ and commemorated.
