Kilt with suspenders?

I suppose I should say braces, rather. I've seen some pictures of old military kilts and they have buttons sewn on the tops of them in the exact spot they'd be on SD trousers. Did soldiers ever use braces to hold up their kilts or could buttons like this be just a personal addition in the field from a soldier with a too-big kilt?

As Joe mentions in post 29 of the Seaforths thread, they were an unofficial modification to allow braces to be worn, but it certainly was done:
