As I am researching the lives of former pupils of Wrekin College killed in WW1 I'd be grateful of copies of Charles Steward, Arthur Price & Victor Snelson of the KSLI. Do you know the battalion for Price?

Thanks

Jeremy.

Hi Neil

Would you have the photo of Evans, Audley. Royal Welsh Fusiliers 1914 by any chance as I believe he is my great grand father. Any help you could provide would be appreciated.

Many thanks

Welcome to the Forum. I can't help you with a photo but, given that you state you only believe he's your great grandfather, I can provide a little bit more detail to assist.

The only Audley Evans in RWF was 9694 Audley Evans who enlisted 13th November 1907 aged 19yrs in RWF. During the war he served with 1st Battalion in France 4 10 1914 to 21 10 1914 when he was wounded and sent back to UK. France again 2 2 1915 to 20 3 1915 when he returned to UK again (reason not known) and then France & Italy from 12 5 1915 to 19 2 1919. As well as the 'trio' of campaign medals he  received the Meritorious Service Medal, the Croix de Guerre (Italy) and was Mentioned in Despatches. In the 1920 renumbering excesise he was renumbered to 4178931 and died of Heat Stroke in India (1st Bn) as Colour Sgt on 4 7 1923.

He married Mary Clancy in Dublin 29 4 1915. Two daughters, Mary Johanna born Dublin 9 12 1919 and Patricia Gertrude born Lucknow 19 3 1921.

I stand to be corrected but I don't think that the actual despatches are available. It'd be prudent to verify/debunk this though and someone more knowledgable hopefully will come along to do that. (Edit: See below link to gallantry awards)

Meanwhile here are the relevant London/Edinburgh Gazette entries for the three awards. You'll have to page back in each to get the 'header'

In terms of campaign medals he got

1914 Star... with clasp/rose

British War Medal

Victory Medal

Given the post war service in India I'd have expected an Indian General Service Medal but I can't readily find a reference to it.

This explains the campaign medals

You have the dates he was in France (1st Bn went to Italy in Nov 1917) so you might want to splash out about 3 quid and download the 1st Battalion War Diary for France.

There are quite a few lengthy list for the earlier months so you might find a refrence to him in one of those. He was wounded on 19 10 1914 (will explain later on)

Their  War Diary for the Italian theatre has not been digitised but here's the National Archives reference

The RWF Archives are now held at Wrexham County Archives. In the RWF Archives are the post 1920 enlistment book and it is from his entry in this book that I made the notes which I provided in the previous post. Also there are the 1st Battalion Casualty Books and it is this book that provided the date for the Oct 1914 wounding. You might want to consider visitin/contacting the Archives to view or possibly obtain copies of his entries.

As he served post war his file should be at the MoD. You may want to explore the possibilties of obtaining a copy. There is a cost involved (about £30 I think) and may take some months. Be sure to provide the seven digit number. Here's the link. Scroll to the appropriate section

Apologies for contacting you years after the initial postings on this theme but I seek information from Brigadier-General NeilEvans.

I was recently in the graveyard at Calverhall church Shropshire when i came across a memorial cross to the memory of:

William Edward Morris, Kings Shropshire Light Infantry. Died of Wounds in France, September 21st 1916.

I notice Neil has a photograph of a William Edward Morris from The Wellington Journal and Shrewsbury News. I wonder if this is the same man?

Could I ask for as much information on this soldier as you have along with the photograph and perhaps advice on how I can research his records.

I trust you are still out there and look forward to your reply.

                                                                 Thank You

Hello Neil

Apologies - I didn't follow protocol and pm'd you yesterday. I'm looking for information on Pte Leban (aka Lebon) James of West Felton serving with Lancashire Fusilliers who died in Greece in 1916. He's the great uncle of a work colleague who does not have internet access.

Thanks in advance

Regards

Martin

My great uncle William Fletcher 19073 5th battalion KSLI died of wounds in Amiens. I researched when doing family history and visited his grave twice. I was desperate for a photograph but never found one. Do you have a photograph of him, I would be so pleased to receive one!  Graham@hashem.karoo.co.uk

Hi,

I was wondering if you had a photo or news clipping for Pte Thomas Cooper, 6713 (2nd Btn, Kings Shropshire Light Infantry)

He died on 9th May 1915.

Bodenham, Cecil. King's Liverpool Regiment 1914

I note that Neil hasn't been on the forum for quite a while, so I hope all is well with him.

Cecil Bodenham, born at Much Wenlock, was serving in the 9th King's Liverpool Regiment when he was killed at Guillemont on 12th August, 1916.

I would appreciate a photo of him, if possible.
