Men who went into captivity after the fall of Kut

Based on surviving service records 122699 RFA was in a cohort who attested under the Derby Scheme and were mobilised in January 1916, in his case probably the 20th January.  This is spot on for a single man born in 1894 who attested under the Scheme, he would be in Group 4 see http://www.longlongtrail.co.uk/soldiers/a-soldiers-life-1914-1918/enlisting-into-the-army/the-group-scheme-derby-scheme/

 

It is therefore, as noted above unlikely to say the least he was present at the Fall of Kut as the siege began on the 7 December 1915.

In view of Ken's post, it suggests that the source of the service number you quoted, Steve, need verifying. He wears very smart boots in the photo. Could he have been a Driver rather than a gunner ? We need to verify each piece of info please.

DJC sometimes poster of this parish has a very scarce book called "the sufferings of the Kut  Garrison" which I believe gives much information on those who were captured, he is a bit like a pike, lure him out from the "reeds" offering to show/sell him a scarce 1914=19 book with a dustwrapper!!!
