Remembered Today:

11th Battalion Royal Irish Rifles

I am carrying out research on my town (Antrim) during the Great War.

Most of the local men fought with the 11th Batt. Royal Irish Rifles (South Antrims) and I have gathered some useful information.

What I really need is the battalion war diary and I was hoping someone on the site can help me with this.

Obviously I would rather not have to travel to London to obtain a copy so I was wandering if there was anywhere else I could get it.

Surprisingly, the regimental museum in Belfast does not hold a copy so if anyone can help, please let me know.

The reference for this War Diary is WO95/2506 and runs from the unit's arrival in France in October 1915 through to October 1917.

The National Archives Catalogue allows purchase of parts of it,I think the rate is 8.50 for ten pages,so it might be that you see what parts you need before committing.

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/catalogue

The whole Diary would cost a pretty penny,so you must hope that someone here can refer you to a freeby or a ref to a book on the Unit/Regiment.

Visiting Kew gets you a free look and unlimited digital photos of the pages, photocopies on site are 10p a page.

You might like to post any dates you are particularly interested in.

Try and get a copy of "With the Ulster division in France"--from Bordon to Thiepval. This is a small book based on the records kept by Capt. A.P.I. Samuels who served with the 11th Royal Irish Rifles and was killed 24th Sept 1916. Contains embarkation lists +died , wounded, etc for 1st July 1916. Try Naval and Military Press or pm me.

Thanks everyone for your help.

I have a copy of API Samuel's book and I've read all the info from the Ballymena 'Carved in Stone' and 12th RIR websites.

I was hoping I could get a copy of the 11th RIR diary in Northern Ireland.

But it looks like a visit to Kew is required.

Desmond7 - you wouldn't be Des Blackadder by any chance. If you are, congrats on your excellent website.

The cheapest way of obtaining a unit War Dairy at the minute from the National archives other than to travel over is to hire a private Researcher who will ask for around £30 and then you pay for the photocopies after that. Hopefully another forum pal has a copy but highly unlikely.

Regards,

Phil
