Tom Morgan Posted 1 November , 2002 Share Posted 1 November , 2002 Trying to research 2/Lt Harry Burton who died of wounds October 1917. Served with the 3/ South Staffs. Any help appreciated. Was he from Bloxwich, and wrote some poetry? Not wanting to raise your hopes as that's all I know about him! Tom

ttd0 Posted 2 November , 2002 Author Share Posted 2 November , 2002 Bloxwich is in Walsall! How come you know of his poetry, I have never heard of him before, but then again I'm not an expert on Great War poets. Tim
Chris_Baker Posted 2 November , 2002 Share Posted 2 November , 2002 Ah, Bloxwich. My Dad always used to say that was where they put the pig on the wall to watch the band go by! You know the way Brits tell Irish jokes, and Americans tell Polish jokes, etc? Walsall folk tell Bloxwich jokes.
ttd0 Posted 4 November , 2002 Author Share Posted 4 November , 2002 Oops His name was HOWRAD Burton not Harry. Still, he was from Walsall/ Bloxwich Tim.
AndrewThornton Posted 4 November , 2002 Share Posted 4 November , 2002 Probably your best source for finding information would be to contact the Walsall Local History Centre. They are located at an old school in Essex Street in the town, and have copies of the Walsall Observer and Walsall Pioneer available on microfilm. They can also do copies of photographs from the original newspapers for a reasonable price. I don't have the full contact details, but you would be able to access their website through the Walsall Metropolitan Borough Council site at: http://www/walsall.gov.uk As for the Bloxwich poet, it wasn't Harry Burton but was a chap called Harold Parry. He served with a battalion of the KRRC (17th I think) as is buried at Vlamertinge. Hope this helps. ttd0 Posted 5 November , 2002 Author Share Posted 5 November , 2002 Thanks for the information. Coincidence that the officer I am researching is from the Walsall area as well! Will write to the history centre. Many Thanks Tim.
