Well, here they are together. The one on top has a larger screw head to tighten the rear sight slide. It was made in 1899. The other was made in 1896. However, they are just 257 serial numbers apart. Bother were converted to CLLE's at Vickers in 1908. Both have perfect stampings in the wood and have not been sanded or cleaned. Excellent bores too.

Is it my imagination, or does the lower one have a magazine for Mk.VII ball?

The upper rifle has a magazine off of a No. I Mk III, The bottom rifle has an early magazine with the movable tab on the upper right side. It's a number 2 . You can see that it's slightly longer than the other magazine. Some call this magazine a No I Mk I. Both rifles are sighted to use Mk VII ammo. and have Enfield rifling
