MJohnson Posted 20 August , 2009 Share Posted 20 August , 2009 Can anyone help with information regarding this lapel badge . A friend believes it was issued in 1914 to professional footballers who played in matches to raise money for comforts for the troops serving abroad . Was it issued throughout the war and indeed issued only to footballers .
Graham Stewart Posted 20 August , 2009 Share Posted 20 August , 2009 This will be the lapel badge of the Athlete's Volunteer Force that you're talking about which also comes with a red or white enamel background to the lettering. They were indeed former sportsmen, rather than just footballers, who formed various sections throughout the country and they became affiliated to the Volunteer Training Corps, which was the Home Guard of WWI. Graham Stewart Posted 20 August , 2009 Share Posted 20 August , 2009 This is a group photo of members of the AVF, these lads are wearing the white oval AVF badge and as you can well see from their ages well past their sporting prime.
