Ian Underwood Posted 20 April , 2004 Share Posted 20 April , 2004 Monday's SMH featured this article about the two 'missing' statues from Sydney War Memorial in Hyde Park in the middle of Sydney's CBD. The statues in question were made in the '30s by the talented scuplture Raynor Hoff, but never mounted due to pressue by the Catholic Church who thought the statues to be "immoral, revolting & offensive". Unfortunately, the casts went missing from the main Commonwealth Bank's vaults in 1967, and have not been seen since. Article here Thye look like beautiful pieces of work, I'll post a pic of one below. Raynor Hoff emigrated from England in 1923, I wonder if he served in WW1? Anyone know? There's a nice view from above of the memorial here. Ian.
michaeldr Posted 20 April , 2004 Share Posted 20 April , 2004 quote: "The Catholic archbishop of Sydney, Michael Sheehan, announced that he would not be attending the laying of the foundation stone on July 19, 1932. The memorial, he said, was "obviously intended only for Protestants"." The archbishop seems to have had more than his fair share of prejudices. What a great pity if these pieces of art are indeed lost Regards Michael D.R.
