Bingo794 Posted 8 August , 2009 Share Posted 8 August , 2009 Can anyone tell me the type of ships this man was concerned with and what each ships role would be? Victory I Commonwealth Vivid I Albion Vivid III This man was born 22/03/1886 and had 10 years with the Royal Navy. Also, what would his medal entitlement have been? 1915Star/BWM/VM is likely, but would he have had an LSGC type or General Service Medal? I have been sent the NA entry. http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documen...37/87/0/103.pdf Any help with this would be most appreciated. horatio2 Posted 9 August , 2009 Share Posted 9 August , 2009 COMMONWEALTH and ALBION were both battleships. VICTORY and VIVID were both accounting bases/barracks at Portsmouth and Plymouth respectively. The papers for his former naval service as a stoker RN are here (note forename discrepancy):- http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documen...p;resultcount=1 1914-14 Star trio is his entitlement. Bingo794 Posted 9 August , 2009 Author Share Posted 9 August , 2009 Many Thanks H2 I saw 'Edwin' and wondered about the possibility of a mistake. How are your eyes? Any chance of a transcription? I cannot read half of it, even with my new bins on. Interesting stuff, though. Most impressed. horatio2 Posted 9 August , 2009 Share Posted 9 August , 2009 CARNARVON and BONAVENTURE - cruisers. INDUS - Training ship at Devonport. GOSSAMER - Gunboat converted to minesweeper. Google for more information on each.
Bingo794 Posted 9 August , 2009 Author Share Posted 9 August , 2009 H2 Unbelievable. This the quickest piece of research I have known. Another transcription would be great. I would enlarge the images, however, I am stuck on a laptop which is new to me and it doesn't have the same programmes as my trusty old PC. H2 I will get onto the FAAM for these details today. Of course, I will share what I am sent with you and the GWF for your time and interest. Fantastic stuff. horatio2 Posted 9 August , 2009 Share Posted 9 August , 2009 Initial training at RMLI Recruit Depot Deal, Kent. Plymouth Division RMLI (Stonehouse Barracks, Plymouth). EUROPA - cruiser. He transferred to stoker RN while serving in BONAVENTURE. A bit hard to read but it looks as though he had a couple of periods in cells which lowered his character below VG in 1903 and 1904. Details of those offences should be in his FAAM papers.

Bingo794 Posted 10 August , 2009 Author Share Posted 10 August , 2009 Many thanks for all your help on this one. I have managed to put together a fair old overview of his service career. The interest generated by your help and enthusiasm has got one or two people in the family thinking. Then, old photos not seen in years turn up with the life buoy of 'Albion' in the background, enabling us to put a date to the picture. Edward and his mate on board in uniform. There are even papers being looked for in the house. This has got them all digging around. Edward moved to Grimsby after WW1 and died in 1963. After moving to Grimsby he spent his life on trawlers as a ships engineer. Cheers, Dick
