Earl of Berkhamsted Posted 7 August , 2009 Share Posted 7 August , 2009 I would very grateful if anyone could help please. Here's a photo of my Great-Grandad Harry Heming. Can anyone tell me please, the stripes on his tunic - are these rank markings or something else? Whilst in the Seaforths, he was only a L/Corporal, but joined the 18th London Rifles after the war and made Sergeant. Any help at all would be accepted gratefully. Regards, EoB. Earl of Berkhamsted Posted 7 August , 2009 Author Share Posted 7 August , 2009 Thanks Jonathon and forgive my ignorance. Harry's first posting overseas was November 1916, so does that pinpoint the date of the photograph to at least November 1919? Regards, EoB. The Overseas Service badges were not introduced until the beginning of 1918, so any photo showing them is not before that date. The first chevron was awarded the moment a soldier stepped ashore, and then annually. So, Nov 1916 Nov 1917 Nov 1918 gets him three.
Earl of Berkhamsted Posted 7 August , 2009 Author Share Posted 7 August , 2009 Thanks Grumpy. I appreciate the help. I have just posted a portrait of him if you fancy a look. Thanks again. EoB.
Ghost Posted 8 August , 2009 Share Posted 8 August , 2009 Thats odd isn't it! If the first stripe is for setting foot ashore, ie zero oversea's service, that would mean 3 stripes is for 2 years. Alan
