asdarley Posted 5 August , 2009 Share Posted 5 August , 2009 Here are some views of a 1/32nd model of a whippet tank. My questions are: Is the additional gear attached an accurate reflection? In particular the two boxes either side of the turret. Also, what are the items on the turret roof and attached to the turret sides? Spare track links maybe? Or additional armour? I am about to build a model Whippet myself and would like to know what is what before starting!
MikB Posted 6 August , 2009 Share Posted 6 August , 2009 Also, what are the items on the turret roof and attached to the turret sides? I may stand corrected, but I suspect these are grousers, to provide additional purchase for the tracks if the tank needs to cross broken ground with soft mud. asdarley Posted 6 August , 2009 Author Share Posted 6 August , 2009 Thanks Mik. That could be correct. Several photos of whippets from the period show them having these things hanging off various parts of the hull. However, I have yet to see an original photo showing a whippet with the two "cubby" boxes attached. Has anyone seen such a picture? Though Tankies in all wars were fond of piling anything and everything onto their vehicles!
Tom W. Posted 6 August , 2009 Share Posted 6 August , 2009 Here are several period photos that show the boxes. Scroll down to the section titled "In Action": http://www.landships.freeservers.com/whippet_info.htm And yes, the items on the roof are track grousers.
