Any information on 2nd Lt (Temp Catp) S Oates, Welsh Rgt. MID (LG 6-12-16).

He may have a service file at Kew under WO339/38867. There is just the one under Captain S OATES so there is a fair chance it is his,of course it may not be ! A recent disappointment in that area springs to mind.

From my Roll of Officers of the Welsh Regiment:

Oates,S: 2nd Bn and 1st Bn Welsh Regt. prior service in the ranks of the Warwickshire Regt in the Sudan.

Stephen Oates.

MID 22.6.15. (CSM) & 6.12.16;

Originally served with the Royal Warwick Regt in the Sudan, as a Corporal.

Oates saw a brief spell of service with the S&T Corps in 1904.

He was transferred to the 1st Welsh Regiment in September 1908.

Service records state received a serious GSW to head and legs 27.3.15.

He married Emily Louisa Gay on 18th February 1908, at Alton Registry Office. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal in September 1919.

He served in France and Salonika with the 1st Bn. Contracting Malaria on active service. Appears in 1927 AL Supplement as Capt RARO, (Class II Reserve), voluntarily on the Reserve List.

Whitehorne (Regimental History) notes him as being wounded by a rifle grenade in Trench E1 (Dranoutre Sector) on Easter day 1915 (p.340).

Served with the 1st Bn in Salonika, and was especially mentioned in Lt.Col.Span's diary as being recommended for foreign awards on two separate occasions, latterly for the Serbian Order of the White Eagle, these appear to have been substituted by "higher authority" for MID's.

Post War served in Belfast with 2nd Bn. L.G: of 8.1.19. notes that he reverted to Lieutenant and relinquished the Temporary rank of Captain on 29.10.18.

Queens Sudan Medal (Pte. Royal Warks.), 1914-15 Star (C.S.M. No.9878, Welsh Regt.) BWM & VM (Capt.), LSGC (CSM). Khedives Sudan bar Khartoum, (Pte.R.Warks) BWM & VM (Capt.) (MIC states Lt.) d: 4.4.21, Emblems d: 18.6.20. First Theatre, France, 19.1.15. Address: Depot Welsh Regt., Cardiff.
