The staining was caused by picric acid, which is bright yellow.

Sadly, another cause of yellowing applied to those women who worked with TNT powder, before it was heated to turn liquid or waxy. This could give rise to jaundice and a natural yellowing of the flesh. I recently gave a talk on the pioneering work of (later Sir) Dr Bernard Spilsbury, who carried out the first autopsies of women who were found to have died of TNT poisoning.
