deano Posted 29 July , 2009 Share Posted 29 July , 2009 Hello, After many years of searching, at last on the monday just gone, got to see and record the names on the above Roll of Honour. I did think that the majority of names on there would be from Sheffield. They were not. They cover some 73 Regiments and 220 names from all over the UK, Australia and Canada. Would the forum be interested in researching the names on there as a 'one off' special on line here, considering the national and international flavour of the memorial ? I would put forward the list of names, pics of the memorial, and also my quick check of CWGC for the mens numbers. I would be looking for anything at all on the men listed, then put it all together for the Local Studies Library here in Sheffield. I am not looking for a favour for other people to do the research for me, it was just the fact there were so many men from so many regiments and places they came from i felt it belonged to us all. There could also be possible non-coms. Dean.

Esskay Posted 30 July , 2009 Share Posted 30 July , 2009 With the online records available for Australia and Canada - they should be relatively easy to find (probably famous last words) - happy to have a go Sounds like there is a story behind this Roll of Honour Dean - would love to know more if you can share Cheers Sue

There are actually 3 panels, two bearing the names, the central panel looks like it had a metal plaque, but this has disappeared. Dean.

larney Posted 4 August , 2009 Share Posted 4 August , 2009 Hi Dean, Welsh Regiment; Hubert Miles Punter, 18872, served with the 15th Welsh ‘Carmarthen Pals’. He had originally landed in France on 18 July 1915 attached to the 9th Welsh, but at some time was posted to the 15th. He would have been wounded at some time after the 15th Welsh crossed the Ancre on 22 August 1918, when the 38th Division began the push across the old Somme Battlefields. He died on 22 October 1918, and is buried at Brynmenyn Congregational Chapelyard. John Lyth, 47672, is listed as Depot Battalion. He died on 4 October 1918 and is buried at Hartlepool (Stranton) Cemetery. F. Taylor, 53864, served with the 9th Welsh. He died on 10 March 1919 and is buried at Aberbeeg (Christ Church) Churchyard.
