jay dubaya Posted 26 July , 2009 Share Posted 26 July , 2009 Soren, Herbert was reported KIA on that date. The battalion took part in the Battle of Frezenberg Ridge on the 8th. Colonel Murphy records that he enemy sent over projectiles of every caliber, HE shells crashed in all directions. Guns and Howitzers shook the earth - 'the crackle of machine guns and musketry mingling with the boom of mortars and bombs, made a noise that sounded like an army of riviters at work during some titanic thunderstorm.' At the same time men were being blinded and choked by gas. When the enemy attacked the brunt of the onslaught fell on the 3rd Monmouthshires, 2nd King's Own, 1st Suffolks and 2nd Cheshires. The attack was driven off, a second attack was also defeated - 'but by this time practiclly all the men in the frontline trenches had been killed, wounded or buried.' Relieved on the 9th and survivors assembled in Balloon Wood west of Vlamertinghe. Casualties recorded as all but one officer and 947 other ranks.
